Alexander Isak sees room for improvement despite Newcastle's strong start
Alexander Isak heads into the international break confident there's more to come from Newcastle, despite their strong Premier League points total.
Isak currently plays for Newcastle United, having joined the Premier League club from Real Sociedad in 2022.
He started his career in Sweden with AIK, before joining Borussia Dortmund which included a loan spell with Dutch side Willem II.
Isak made his international debut in 2017 and was selected for the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.
He was part of the Dortmund squad that won the DFB Pokal in 2017 and also won the 2020 Copa del Rey with Real Sociedad.
Isak joined boyhood club AIK at the age six and went on to spend 10 years in their youth system from 2005 until 2015 before eventually breaking into their first team.
Isak made his professional debut and scored his first-ever goal for AIK after coming on as a substitute in a Swedish Cup match in February 2016 at just 16-years-old.
In Isak’s first-ever start for the club in a fixture against Ostersunds FK in April 2016, he officially became the club’s youngest-ever goal-scorer in the Swedish First Division) at only 16 years and 199 days.
Isak scored a total of 13 goals in 29 appearances for AIK until the Bundesliga came knocking.
In January 2017, Isak moved to Germany to join Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund for a reported fee of 9million euros which at the time, was the highest transfer fee ever paid for a player from the Swedish top flight.
The Swede made his debut for Dortmund in March 2017 and played only a bit part role in Dortmund’s 2017 DFB-Pokal triumph. He made only one appearance in the entire competition - a four-minute cameo in a 3-0 quarter-Final victory over Sportfreunde Lotte.
He scored his first competitive goal for the club in 5-0 DFB-Pokal victory over FC Magdeburg in October 2017.
After failing to make a big impact with Dortmund, Isak was loaned to Dutch side Willem II in the second-half of the 2018/19 campaign.
He had an impressive spell in the Netherlands scoring 14 times in just 18 outings in all competitions and helped the club reach the KNVB Cup final for the first time in 14 years.
Isak was the hero for Wilem II in their KNVB Cup semi-final match against AZ Alkmaar. Not only did he score the equaliser in the game but he also went on to score the winning penalty in the penalty shootout.
On March 30, 2019, Isak created Dutch football history by the becoming the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in one match in the top tier of the league.
He also became the first non-Dutchman to score 12 goals in his first 12 Eredivisie appearances.
The last of his 12 goals in this impressive run came in Wilem II’s 2-0 victory at home to PEC Zwolle on April 14, 2019.
Isak left Dortmund for good in the summer of 2019 to join Spanish La Liga outfit Real Sociedad.
He scored his first goal for the club in their 3-1 victory over RCD Espanyol in La Liga on September 22, 2019.
The Swede won the second piece of silverware of his career when he helped Sociedad win the Copa del Rey in the 2019/20 season.
Isak appeared in all eight rounds on route to the club winning the competition and scored seven times in total including twice in a 4-3 win over Real Madrid in the quarter-finals.
Isak started and played 89 minutes in the final as Sociedad secured a 1-0 victory over their arch rivals Athletic Bilbao to win the second Copa del Rey in their history and first since 1987.
Despite the club’s triumph technically coming in the 2019/20 campaign, the final was played in April 2021 due to it being delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic.
In February 2021, Isak bagged a hat-trick for Sociedad in their 4-0 victory over Deportivo Alaves.
With this, he became the first Swede to score a hat-trick in Spain’s elite tier of football since Henry Carlsson for Atletico Madrid in 1949.
Isak spent three full seasons at the team based in the Basque country and in total, he netted 44 times in 132 appearances.
In August 2022, Isak joined English Premier League club Newcastle United for a then club record fee of £55million.
Despite missing a good chunk of the season through injury, Isak’s first season playing in England was a strong one with the Swede netting a total of 10 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions including one on his debut against Liverpool at Anfield.
On November 28, 2023, Isak scored his first-ever goal in the Champions League when he found the back of the net for the Magpies in their 1-1 draw away at Paris Saint Germain.
Isak played in both Sweden’s under-16s and under-21s team before eventually being called up to their senior squad in early 2017.
He made his debut against the Ivory Coast in January 2017 and became the Sweden’s youngest-ever goal-scorer at just 17 years and 113 days when netting in Sweden’s 6-0 friendly victory over Slovakia back in his second appearance.
Isak was a part of Sweden’s squad for Euro 2020 as his country reached the last 16 of the tournament. He started all four games for Sweden and though he failed to score in the tournament, he still caught the eye of many.
Isak’s mum and dad left war-torn Eritrea in search of a better life and emigrated to Solna, a suburb outside of Stockholm, where Isak was born.
Isak reportedly earns £120,000 per week at Newcastle and his net worth is around £18.6 million.
