Anthony Gordon is an English professional football player who is used as a winger for Premier League side Newcastle United.
Gordon joined Newcastle from Everton back at the start of 2023 for an initial fee of around £40 million pounds potentially rising to £45 million in add-ons.
He played over 50 times for Everton whilst helping them avoid relegation during the 2021/22 season.
He was part of the Newcastle squad that gained qualification to the Champions League for the 2023/24 season.
He made his Champions League debut against AC Milan at the San Siro where he started in a 0-0 draw.
On 14 March 2024, Gordon was called up to the England senior squad for their friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March 2024.
Youth career and Everton breakthrough
Gordon joined Everton when he was 11 years old after he was released from Liverpool’s academy.
In 2017, he was named in the first team squad for a Europa League match against Apollon Limassol. The next day he made his senior debut coming on as a substitute with a few minutes to spare.
He would not make his Premier League debut until 2020 when he came on as a substitute against West Ham in a 1-1 draw.
On February 1, 2021, Gordon joined Championship club Preston North End on loan for the remainder of the 2020/21 season. He made 11 appearances but failed to score.
Gordon returned to Everton for the 2021/22 season and established himself in the first team playing 35 times, scoring four goals and assisting twice.
He helped Everton survive relegation to the Championship before he handed in a transfer request halfway through the 2022/23 season.
Gordon was due to sign a new contract with Everton in December 2022 but his relationship with the club soon soured. He was also confronted by fans outside Goodison Park following a damaging loss to bottom side Southampton in January 2023.
A week later Gordon tried to manufacture a move away from the Premier League and failed to turn up to training on several occasions.
By the end of the month he had secured a move to Newcastle for an undisclosed fee, which is understood to be worth an initial £40million, with £5million of add-ons.
Gordon had made 78 first-team appearances for Everton and scored seven goals.
Newcastle United and Champions League adventure
On January 29, 2023, Gordon completed his switch to Newcastle on a long-term contract.
“Since I heard of the interest, I was always convinced Newcastle were for me,” Gordon told NUFC TV.
“I think the fan-base and the city really suits me as a person, the way the team are playing under the gaffer at the minute really suits me, and the club just look like they’re heading in the right direction.”
“I feel like it’s a really big step. People haven’t seen what I’m capable of yet. I think under the gaffer, and the way the club’s going, I can really excel here.”
On 4 February 2023, he made his debut for the club against West Ham United as a substitute in a 1-1 draw.
In March, Gordon was named in the starting line-up for the first time, but it was against Manchester City and they lost 2-0.
Gordon scored his first goal for the club in a 1–1 draw with Chelsea in May.
The following season Gordon made his Champions League bow after Newcastle finished fourth in the 2022/23 Premier League season.
His debut came against AC Milan in the opening group stage game, in which they gained a point off the Italian side.
In the next match, he started in Newcastle’s famous 4-1 demolition of French side PSG for the Magpies' first win of the tournament.
He featured in the rest of matches, two losses against Dortmund, draw in Paris and a loss at home to Milan that saw them exit the Champions League finishing bottom of their group.
