After winning a stack of trophies as a player at Manchester City, former Anderlecht and Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has now taken the helm at Bayern Munich.

Vincent Kompany is a former professional football player now turned manager.

During his playing career he won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups with Manchester City and played a key role in the club's success over the 2010s. He has a statue outside the Etihad Stadium to mark his legendary status there.

The centre-back also played for Hamburg and Anderlecht, who he would later go onto manage, as well as making 89 appearances for the Belgium national side.
He won the Belgian First Division with Anderlecht twice and the Intertoto Cup with Hamburg.
In his short time in management he guided Burnley to the Championship title and a return to the Premier League in his first season in charge, whilst head coach at Anderlecht his side were beaten finalists in the Belgian Cup final.
Burnley were relegated from the Premier League at the end of the 2023/24 season and Kompany left the club to become the head coach of Bayern Munich.

    Vincent Kompany's playing career

Kompany started his playing career with Anderlecht at the age of 17. He played first team football with Anderlecht from 2003 until 2006 helping them win two Belgian League titles.
Kompany made 121 appearances for Anderlecht and scored seven goals, and immediately stood out as someone who had potential, which attracted many of Europe's top sides. His performances for his club earned him the Belgian League's player of the year award in 2004.

In June 2006, Kompany joined Hamburg from Anderlecht for a fee of around £10million. He only managed 13 appearances for the German outfit before he injured his Achilles which ruled him out for the remainder of the 2006/07 campaign.

He would go on to only make a total of 51 appearances or Hamburg before joining Manchester City at the start of the 2008/09 season for a fee of around £6million.

Kompany made 360 appearances for Manchester City and became a fan favourite in the decade he spent at the club. He won four Premier League titles, two FA Cups and four League Cups and became one of the most decorated defenders in Premier League history.

He was also a regular in the Belgium national side throughout his career, making 89 appearances and scoring four goals. He also played in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, where Belgium finished third.

    Return to Anderlecht

In 2019 it was announced that Kompany was leaving City to go back to Anderlecht where he originally started his football career.
Kompany re-joined the Belgian as a player-manager but as results weren't quite up to scratch, he relieved himself of his managerial duties and focused on playing.
But the twilight years of his career started to catch up with him and he hung up his boots at the end of the season after Anderlecht finished a disappointing eighth place.

Kompany was named Anderlecht manager on a full-time basis in August 2020 and improved the club's league position, finishing fourth in the table and qualifying for the Europa Conference.

He also guided the club to the semi-final of the Belgian Cup, but they were knocked out 2-1 by Genk.
In the 2021/22 season, Anderlecht reached the final of the Belgian Cup but lost on penalties to Gent and finished a disappointing third in the league.
Many consider Kompany's time at Anderlecht to be a flop after he failed to restore the club's biggest club to their former glories.

    Promotion and relegation at Burnley

In the summer of 2022, Kompany was charged with returning recently relegated Burnley to the Premier League.
The Clarets were forced to sell several key players and Kompany was tasked with a large rebuilding project which saw him utilise the loan market and bring in a handful of players from the Belgian league.

The success was swift, with Burnley taking top spot in the Championship in October and never letting it go.

Kompany returned Burnley to the Championship with seven games to spare and also took the club to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup, where they lost 6-0 to his old club Manchester City

He was also named Championship manager of the season.
But Kompany was unable to keep Burnley in the top flight and they were relegated with one game remaining; ending the season in 19th place, eight points from safety.

    Kompany at Bayern Munich

On May 29, 2024, Kompany left Burnley to become the new head coach of Bayern Munich, agreeing a contract until 2027 to replace Thomas Tuchel at the Allianz Arena.

Bayern reportedly agreed a compensation fee of £10.2million with the Clarets for Kompany.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge of FC Bayern,” said Kompany.

“It’s a great honour to be able to work for this club – FC Bayern is an institution in international football.

“As a coach, you have to stand for what you are as a character: I love having the ball, being creative – but we also have to be aggressive and courageous on the pitch.

“I’m now looking forward to the basics: working with the players, building a team. Once the basis is right, success will follow.”

He is tasked with regaining the Bundesliga title after Bayer Leverkusen ended Bayern’s 11-season stranglehold on the German league.

Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen: “All of us at the club agree that Vincent Kompany is the right coach for FC Bayern and we are very much looking forward to working with him.

“Max Eberl (board member) and Christoph Freund (sporting director) have worked tirelessly and meticulously to find a coach who will lead FC Bayern to success and continue to develop the club with new ideas.

“Vincent Kompany represents exactly the togetherness and team spirit that we need.”

    Personal life

Kompany has worked with many charities most of which he represents with his father's native Congo. He is also a FIFA ambassador for the charity SOS Children. As well as this he also owns some of his own venues in Belgium.

Kompany is married to Manchester City fan Carla Higgs, who he began dating while he played for Hamburg. The couple have two children Sienna and Kai.
