Celtic v Bayern Munich betting preview
European defeats have become commonplace since the regularity with which they meet household names has increased in recent years, but the Hoops still own a strong record.
They’ve avoided defeat in 52 of 77 home Champions League fixtures, more recently frustrating the likes of Atletico Madrid and Manchester City.
On the other hand, Vincent Kompany's Munich side could field an entirely second-string side and still possess quality the likes of which Celtic could only dream of.
That didn’t prevent Feyenoord from ripping one of the world’s best limb from limb in a pit of noise last month. If it’s one thing Celtic Park can guarantee, it’s a blistering atmosphere.
Bayern’s away record in the Champions League is shambolic. Defeats to the Dutch outfit, Barcelona, Aston Villa, Real Madrid and Lazio surround their sole away win in the past year, a 5-1 thrashing of Shakhtar Donetsk.
Brendan Rodgers' went toe-to-toe with Lazio here last season and recently overturned a two-goal deficit at Villa Park before falling short and losing 4-2.
The more you dig into this fixture, the more you open your mind up to the possibility of a major shock on Wednesday. Or, at the very least, a fixture where both teams score.
Winning at the Allianz Arena looks like an impossible task for the Scottish champions, but the fact that Bayern have such a security blanket could aid the home side in the first leg.
For all their attacking might, there’s nothing scary about the German side’s defence. They’ve conceded in five of their last six and 10 of 11 Champions League fixtures.
Adam Idah, Daizen Maeda and chance-creating machine Nikolas Kuhn will provide more than enough of a threat to help Celtic get on the scoresheet.
