Marseille vs Lyon tips and predictions: Hosts to beat rock-bottom rivals at Stade Velodrome

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of Marseille

Marseille are looking to add insult to injury as they host Ligue 1 rivals Lyon, who seem to be in full on crisis mode.

Marseille will face Lyon in one of the biggest rivalries in French football on Wednesday night, as the Choc des Olympiques takes place at Stade Velodrome.

Olympique Marseille endured a difficult beginning to the season, but things appear to have stabilized at the Velodrome.

Since the start of the season, OM hasn’t tasted defeat in front of their fans. They’re unbeaten in 10 games across all competitions.

Marseille produced an important 2-0 victory against fellow European contenders last time out, beating Rennes 2-0 at home.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Azzedine Ounahi scored the goals in a game that saw Iliman Ndiaye shown a straight red card.

Before that, Aubameyang netted a hat-trick in a thrilling 4-3 win against Ajax in the Europa League, but Marseille games are rarely that high-scoring.

Olympique Lyon are having one of the worst seasons in their entire history. They are bottom of the league and have recorded a single win through 13 Ligue 1 games.

Once a great of European and French football, setting a record by winning seven Ligue 1 titles in a row, shambolic Lyon are on their third manager of the season.

That lone victory came at the expense of a Rennes side that played 85 minutes with 10 men. It still took Lyon until the 67th minute to score, when Jake O’Brien scored the winner.

Since then, they’ve suffered back-to-back defeats against Lille (2-0) and Lens (3-2). They surrendered two leads against Lens.

Given the form of these two sides, it’s hard to see how a team as fragile as Lyon can trouble a Marseille side that are formidable at home.
