World Cup security guard dies after serious fall at Lusail Stadium

Lusail Stadium, Qatar

A migrant worker at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar has succumbed to his injuries after falling from a great height at Lusail Stadium.

Security guard John Njau Kibue was injured on Saturday but after three days in intensive care, tournament organisers have announced he did not survive his injuries.
"Stadium medical teams immediately attended the scene and provided emergency medical treatment before he was transferred to Hamad Medical Hospital's intensive care unit by ambulance," said a statement from the Supreme Committee for Delivery and Legacy.
"We regret to announce that, despite the efforts of the medical team, he sadly passed away in hospital on Tuesday. His next of kin have been informed.
"We send our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time.
"Qatar's tournament organisers are investigating the circumstances leading to the fall as a matter of urgency and will provide further information pending the outcome of the investigation.
"We will also ensure that his family receive all outstanding dues and monies owed."
Kibue is the second migrant worker to have died since the tournament began after another was injured in an accident last week at a training base used by Saudi Arabia.
