‘Serious questions’ need to be asked about Erik ten Hag if poor run continues, says Robbie Savage

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Planet Sport Bet's Robbie Savage believes “serious questions” need to be asked about Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag if the club continue to falter in their upcoming fixtures.

The former Leicester midfielder also describes Manchester United’s last two games ‘as bad as I’ve seen them’.

“The next few games are massive for them,” said Savage speaking to Planet Sport Bet.

“Fulham away in the Premier League, then I’m going out to Copenhagen to watch them in the Champions League.

"If they lose against Fulham on Saturday, then for me, the midweek match next week against Copenhagen becomes a must-win game.

“I’m sure Erik ten Hag doesn’t think everything is fine – he’s got to solve problems and work things out, maybe change his style of football, but whatever he’s doing now is not working.

"If Manchester United lose both of their upcoming games, I think there’s some serious questions to be asked about whether Ten Hag can continue in his role at the club.

“I’ve always said to give Erik ten Hag time and give him until Christmas, but inevitably, all managers and coaches are judged on results.

"If they get beaten by Fulham, you can’t have played 11 and lost six league games in a season and think it’s all fine.

"If they then lose against Copenhagen, that makes their position in the Champions League very vulnerable, considering they still need to go to Galatasaray.”

"Last two results as bad as it’s been for United"

Savage was speaking in the wake of United’s second successive 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford – the latter at the hands of Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup – and suggested that the performance levels in the past four days have seldom stooped lower since Ten Hag was appointed.

“Manchester United’s last two home games have been as bad as I’ve seen them – especially that second half against Manchester City,” he said.

“Then their Carabao Cup game last night – I know both teams made changes, but that performance followed on from that second half against City on Sunday, it was equally as bad.

"It’s a huge worry for Erik ten Hag – the style of football, the confidence and the morale are all a concern, and how many empty seats were there at Old Trafford with 20 minutes remaining?

"They’ve had five defeats out of 10 in the Premier League – it’s massively worrying.

“If they beat Fulham and Copenhagen, then I’ll stick with my opinion that he should be given until Christmas, but we all know that it’s a results business.

"I’m not for one to say we should sack managers because I don’t know what goes on in that football club, but you can’t lose the next two games and think everything will be fine.”
