Jay Rodriguez talks up Burnley "belief" after late-show boosts Premier League survival hopes

Jay Rodriguez

Jay Rodriguez said Burnley's late and dramatic 3-2 win over fellow-strugglers Everton at Turf Moor had given his side "belief" that they can escape Premier League relegation.

The Clarets collected only a fourth win in the top flight this season when Maxwel Cornet scored on 85 minutes to seal a potentially-vital victory in their bid to beat the drop.

It moves Burnley up to third-from-bottom - two points ahead of Watford - and to within just one point of Frank Lampard's men in safety.

Nathan Collins gave the hosts the lead on 12 minutes when he ghosted in unmarked at the far post to send a Cornet corner past Jordan Pickford with a side-foot finish.
That lead lasted just six minutes after Richarlison converted from the penalty spot following an Ashley Westwood challenge on Anthony Gordon.
The Brazilian collected a brace from 12 yards on 41 minutes after Vitali Mykolenko felt contact from Aaron Lennon.
Referee Mike Dean waved away Everton's initial protests but overturned his decision after checking the monitor following VAR intervention.
Rodriguez pulled the hosts back level on 57 minutes with a sweet finish from a Charlie Taylor cross for only his second goal in the Premier League this season.
There was to be more drama on 85 minutes when Cornet slammed home a Matej Vydra cross after a comical Ben Godfrey mis-kick.

Rodriguez told Sky Sports: "This is massive, we know that, we know Everton are in the same position.

"This is a big game for momentum we've got a tough game to play with Norwich. They've got a great manager and great players. But this is all about us, we've got to continue to play how we did in the second half. It's about the momentum, but a special night tonight."

Sean Dyche's men have just nine games left to preserve their top-flight status and Rodriguez said: "We have to win every game now, we have nine games now. It's important for us to be on a winning run, we can't take anything for granted.

"We always talk about relegation. We have a great group of lads who work together. Everton are a great side and we hurt them and cut them open a few times. We still have that belief."

Everton have won only two of nine league games since Lampard replaced Rafael Benitez in January and remain on just one away victory in the Premier League all season.

Lampard told reporters: "They have to keep going. If we didn't know we were in a fight before, they certainly do now. It doesn't feel nice tonight."
