Nigeria vs South Africa tips and predictions: Super Eagles quality can secure AFCON final

Nigeria celebrate

Nigeria will be looking to underline their reputation as one of the strongest footballing powers on the continent when they take on South Africa in the AFCON semi-final (1730 GMT).

Reaching the last four has rarely been a problem for the Super Eagles. This will be the 15th semi-final for Nigeria from their last 19 appearances at the tournament.

Getting to the final, however, has proved somewhat problematic. Five of their last six semis ended in heartbreak, including their last such fixture back in 2019.

So, what are the chances of a different outcome?

In truth, Jose Peseiro’s men have been as clinical as an early 2000s Jose Mourinho team. Nigeria have won their last four games at the tournament to nil, with the 1-0 scoreline landing on three of those occasions.

The Super Eagles are unbeaten in 10 competitive fixtures and are firm favourites to reach to final according to the bookmakers.

What about South Africa? The Bafana Bafana kicked off the tournament with a 2-0 loss to Mali, though they came back strong to reach the semi-final.

A 4-0 win over Namibia underlined their goalscoring power, while their 2-0 victory over Morocco proved they can hang with the big boys.

Hugo Broos and his men edged Cape Verde on penalties to make this stage of the tournament. Nigeria, though, represent a whole different level of competition.

Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman, Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Kelechi Iheanacho – the Super Eagles are certainly not short of big names who compete in top European leagues.

Bearing in mind the quality Nigeria have at their disposal, we’re backing them to continue their AFCON journey.

Nigeria to win the match to nil is our top tip. Lookman, who has already scored three goals at the tournament, is also our pick to get on the scoresheet.
