Manchester United vs Newcastle tips and predictions: Magpies can gain revenge for Carabao Cup final loss

Eddie Howe Callum Wilson September 19 2023

Planet Sport Bet's Robbie Savage believes Newcastle can avenge their 2023 Carabao Cup final defeat as they travel to Old Trafford on Wednesday night (2015 GMT).

This is such a tough one to call.

Will Manchester United play their strongest 11? What is Manchester United’s strongest 11? What is their style of football?

Looking at United’s bench at the weekend, it was quite strong, while Newcastle have a couple of injuries.

If both teams right now had their strongest 11 out, I think Newcastle would go to Old Trafford and win.

Manchester United at the weekend, especially in the second half were so poor.

A tough one to call, but on the basis of both teams not being at their strongest, I'm going to go with a Newcastle win for this repeat of the cup final last season.

Newcastle to win it 2-1.

Robbie’s prediction: Man Utd 1 Newcastle 2

Team news

Luke Shaw (muscle), Amad Diallo (knee), Tyrell Malacia (knee) and Lisandro Martinez (foot) will still be missing on Wednesday night.

Casemiro and Aaron Wan-Bissaka failed fitness tests to play against Manchester City, but could return against Newcastle.

Erik ten Hag is likely to rotate especially after such a poor display against City and Raphael Varane, Sergio Reguilon, Mason Mount, Alejandro Garnacho and Kobbie Mainoo could all play an important role.

Newcastle continue to struggle with a groaning injury list. Harvey Barnes (ankle), Elliot Anderson (back), Jacob Murphy (shoulder), Lewis Miley (illness), Isak (groin) and Sven Botman (knee) will not feature. Nor will betting banned Sandro Tonali.

Eddie Howe made plenty of changes for the previous round's win over Manchester City so Tino Livramento, Matt Targett, Lewis Hall, Joe Willock and Paul Dummett could all reappear.

Key stats

- Newcastle are unbeaten in their last four away games

- Newcastle have only beaten Man Utd once in last eight, in April 2023

Other Planet Sport bets to consider

The pressure is mounting on Manchester United as they prepare to host Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Nothing was surprising about Man City’s demolition job at Old Trafford, but with the Reds stuttering on all fronts, progression in the cup looks a necessity.

Newcastle will be looking to bounce back after losing 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund last Wednesday and drawing 2-2 with Wolves on Sunday.

Eddie Howe was pleased with his side’s performance as they controlled possession and showed no signs of fatigue, but rotation may not be an option.

Another slow start for Erik Ten Hag’s side means they’ve now been outscored 6-0 in the opening 25 minutes of matches at Old Trafford.

Forest, Brighton, Palace, Brentford and City have led 2-0, 3-0, 1-0, 1-0 and 3-0 respectively.

The Toon had a tough fixture list early on but they’ve since found the net five times inside 45 minutes in their previous three away games.

The visitors are likely to target a fast start so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see them open the scoring in the first half, which could be a profitable angle.

It’s also worth noting Howe’s side have netted at least twice in each of their last four, while Man Utd have conceded at least once in eight of nine.

Not only are the visitors in better form, unbeaten in eight games having scored 21 times, but they’ll also be targeting revenge for the 2023 Carabao Cup final defeat.

Callum Wilson is sure to start again given the injury situation. He’s found the net seven times in nine matches and looks a sensible choice in the anytime scorer market.
