Freiburg vs West Ham tips and predictions: Premier League class to prevail in Germany
Planet Sport Bet’s Robbie Savage predicts West Ham can join the short list of clubs to beat Freiburg at Europa-Park Stadion.
Freiburg eighth in the Bundesliga, West Ham seventh in the Premier League. First time obviously these teams have faced each other.
I just think that West Ham, their record in Europe over the part two seasons - a semi-final of the Europa League and winning the Europe Conference League – they’ll have greater experience in Europe over the past two seasons.
On that basis, I think West Ham will go to Freiburg and nick a 1-0 win.
Robbie’s Tip: Freiburg 0-1 West Ham
Freiburg vs West Ham team news
The hosts will be without the services of Yannik Keitel, Max Rosenfelder, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, Christian Gunter and Benjamin Uphoff.
Vincenzo Grifo, Max Phillip and Roland Sallai were all on the scoresheet on matchday one and should start again on Thursday.
Aaron Cresswell looks like the only doubt for West Ham.
Danny Ings, Said Benrahma and Mohammed Kudus could be preferred in attack if David Moyes opts to make changes.
Key stats
- Borussia Dortmund, Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and Juventus are the only four teams to win in Freiburg in 33 matches.
- Juventus were the only side to beat Freiburg in eight Europa League matches last season.
- The Hammers averaged 2.33 goals per game in Europe last season.
- West Ham won 14 of their 15 matches in the Europa Conference League.
Planet Sport’s other bets to consider
Freiburg’s weekend win over a limited Augsburg side was just what was needed after a tough run of fixtures.
Despite their collapse against Stuttgart, the German side beat Hoffenheim on their travels and were level with Dortmund until just after an 82nd-minute red card.
Union Berlin are the only team to have won on this ground outside of Germany’s big three in the past 24 months, so this won’t be straightforward.
It didn’t seem to matter what team David Moyes fielded in last year’s Europa Conference League as the Hammers were a winning machine.
West Ham played 15 matches in the competition and their only blemish was a handy 1-1 draw away to Genk before winning the home leg 4-1.
There’s no doubt the Europa League is a massive step up, as evidenced by FC Baka Topola threatening a sneaky smash-and-grab.
It’s been a good start to the season for the London club, but they have conceded 10 in seven so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the hosts find a way through.
