Rob Edwards may only be at the start of his managerial career, but he has already overseen two promotions - one of those to the Premier League.

As a player, centre-back Edwards had a journeyman career across nine different clubs including Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Barnsley.

The Wales international made over a 100 appearances for Wolves and was part of the Blackpool squad that won promotion to the Premier League via the Championship play-off final. But his career progress was stifled by an ankle injury which eventually cut short his playing career.

After brief spells cutting his managerial teeth at Telford and the England Under-16s, Edwards was named head coach of League Two Forest Green Rovers and secure the title at the end of the 2021/22 season.

He began the 2022/23 season at Watford but was sacked in September 2022 after winning just three of eleven league games.

He joined Watford's bitter rivals Luton Town two months later and guided them to the Premier League by winning the 2023 Championship play-off final against Coventry.

But after relegation from the Premier League and struggling back in the Championship, Edwards left Luton in January 2025.

    Playing career

Edwards started his career as an apprentice at Aston Villa, staying at Villa Park until the end of the 2003/04 season. He only made eight first-team appearances and was mostly loaned out during his time at the club, which included spells at Crystal Palace and Derby County.

He made 100 appearances at Wolverhampton Wanderers, scoring one goal at centre-half during a four-year spell there.

He also represented Blackpool for three seasons, including in the 2010/11 campaign when they were a Premier League club. He went on loan to Norwich that season though before joining Barnsley.

Edwards has also represented Wales, the country of his parents, a total of 15 times between 2004 and 2006.

    Edwards' early managerial career

After retiring at the age of 30, Edwards went into coaching. He had a short spell as interim manager of Wolves during the 2015/16 season.

In 2017, he was named manager of Telford United, his home town club, and finished 10 points outside of the play-offs. This saw him leave the club by mutual consent at the end of the season.

He then returned to Wolves as head coach of the under-23s. He won promotion to the Premier League 2 Division 1 in his first season before leaving again for a new job, becoming a coach for the England under-20s. Head coach of the England under-16s followed, but he only lasted two matches in this role.

In June 2021, he joined Forest Green Rovers as head coach. In his one and only full season, he won the League Two title, guiding FGR to the third tier for the first time in their history. The style of play and dominance of his side attracted interest from Championship clubs and those in other divisions.

It would be newly relegated Championship side Watford who would take him on next. Unfortunately for Edwards, this didn't plan out the way he imagined and after just three wins in 10 league games, he was sacked in September 2022.

He then joined Watford's fierce local rivals Luton Town, guiding them to third place in the Championship and the play-off final, where the Hatters beat Coventry to secure a place in the top flight for the first time since 1991/92.

Premier League and end of the Luton era

Luton lasted just one season in the Premier League after finishing 18th in the 2023/24 season.

They required a significant goal-difference swing on the final day of the season to stand a chance of staying up but it wasn't to be.

Luton had won just once in their final 16 Premier League matches, but did show plenty of grit and determination earlier in the season to keep their hopes of survival alive.

Highlights included victories over Everton, Newcastle and a 4-0 thumping of Brighton. The Hatters also drew 1-1 with Liverpool.

During their match with Bournemouth in December 2023, Luton defender Tom Lockyer collapsed due to a cardiac arrest and the match was abandoned.

Despite revealing he was "technically dead" for nearly three minutes, Lockyer had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) fitted and returned to training with Luton in August 2024.

Edwards was praised for his handling of the Lockyer situation.

Luton's return to the Championship in the following season, did not go to plan for Edwards.

The club struggled and Edwards left the club on January 9, 2025 after a run of four straight defeats has left Luton 20th in the Championship two points above the relegation zone.

Luton suffered fifteen defeats in the Championship and the 2-1 defeat at Queens Park Rangers, Edwards' last game, was their 10th in a row away from home.

"It's been a privilege to manage Luton Town Football Club, but now is the right time for me to move on, for the club and me," Edwards said.

"I'm really proud of what we achieved, not only winning a play-off game which the club had struggled to do, but winning the final and gaining promotion to the Premier League at Wembley was the most amazing experience.

"I take with me some incredible memories, not just the victories against Watford or Sunderland in the semi-final, or Brighton, Newcastle, Palace or Everton.

"But the way we did it, how we played against Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Villa and Manchester United, we were brave and brilliant to watch, how the Kenny bounced and roared. That's what I'll remember.

"The club is in great shape, financially, in a really strong position with an exciting new stadium on the horizon. I really hope I will be able to return as a fan," Edwards added.
