Who will replace Darren Moore as Sheffield Wednesday manager?
Planet Sport takes a look at the early candidates to replace Darren Moore as the manager of Sheffield Wednesday.
Darren Moore's departure from newly-promoted Sheffield Wednesday was a shock to the footballing world.
After securing the most dramatic of promotions via the play-offs, it's rumoured Moore was unhappy with the direction the club were going in.
According to reports, Moore and owner Dejphon Chansiri didn't see eye to eye when discussing transfer plans for the upcoming season.
The recruitment process was said to be underway by the time Moore had departed earlier this week, though it's worth noting any suggestions are rumours at this stage.
Initially, there were no real surprises among the bookmaker's list of favourites for the hot seat at Hillsborough.
Carlos Carvahal has been there before and since the turn of the century, only Gary Megson and the departing Moore bettered his win percentage.
The Portuguese manager took charge of 138 matches at Hillsborough and guided the Owls to back-to-back top-six finishes.
The bookies always tend to throw in a few ringers and
Vitor Campelos and
Torsten Lieberknecht will be foreign to Wednesday's fans.
The former has top-flight experience in Portugal and is available after leaving Chaves earlier this month.
The latter recorded an impressive 55% win rate across two seasons at Darmstadt, who were promoted to the Bundesliga under his stewardship last season.
Nathan Jones and
Gary O'Neil are both out of work after being sacked by Premier League clubs this season.
While Jones failed spectacularly at Southampton, O'Neil seems hard done by having kept Bournemouth up.
His ability to make the most of a limited squad could make him an appealing choice to the Owls chairman, particularly if there aren't funds for an overhaul.
Steven Gerrard has emerged as a shock contender. He immediately jumped to the top of the betting as the 11/4 favourite on Wednesday morning.
The ex-Liverpool midfielder has plenty of experience having managed Rangers in the SPL and Aston Villa in the Premier League.
His time at Villa will go down as a failure with the club's fans, but there's certainly a top footballing brain in there.
A drop-down to the Championship would see him follow in the footsteps of England teammates Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard to learn his craft.
Three big managerial names that aren't linked are currently under consideration by Leeds United.
At least two of
Daniel Farke, Patrick Viera or
Scott Parker won't end up at Elland Road, potentially leaving the door open for a move to Hillsborough.
