Europa League football tip: More goals on the cards as Bayer Leverkusen visit Monaco

Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso

On a busy night of Europa League action, Tipstrr football expert Sergiu Baltuta suspects there are more goals to come in Monaco after the French team's 3-2 first-leg win at Bayer Leverkusen last week.

AS Monaco are firm favourites to reach the last 16 in the Europa League after their 3-2 away win at Bayer Leverkusen in last week's first leg.

They are also favourites if we take into account the recent form of the two teams, and the head-to-head record between them.

In seven previous encounters, Monaco have managed four wins to Leverkusen's solitary success. It's also interesting to note that four of their seven matches produced over 3.5 goals, although historic results alone are no guarantee of another goalfest, of course.

Philippe Clement's team is going through an excellent run of form as they come into the second leg off the back of five straight wins, each of which saw Monaco score at least twice.
Monaco's expansive style of play means that their games are usually very open, with only two clean sheets (both Monaco's) kept by either side in any of their ten games since the World Cup break.

Their last defeat in an official game was on November 13th 2022, when they suffered 1-2 reversal at home against Marseille, and they come into this game after a good 2-1 away win against Brest in Ligue 1.

That win and their previous good form has taken them to 50 points and up to third place in the league table, the last Champions League spot.

Leverkusen's 2-3 defeat against Monaco was followed loss by the same goal-packed scoreline, once again at home, this time against Mainz in the Bundesliga.

Die Werkself seems to be once again in crisis after being seemingly resuscitated by the arrival of Xabi Alonso as head coach in the autumn.

Bayer have managed just one win in their last five games, losing the other four, a run which has taken them all the way down to 10th place with only 27 points.

What is interesting is that it appears to have been all or nothing in the last few months for Leverkusen, as their last draw was on November 1 last year, when they shared a goalless draw with Club Brugge in the Champions League.

Just like Monaco, Bayer's games are not short on entertainment value, with four of their last seven games yielding over 3.5 goals, but in Europe they really have struggled away from home, failing to win any of their last six trips abroad.
