However, despite being interested in the position, Gerrard's lack of managerial experience on the international stage saw him snubbed by Polish FA chief Cezary Kulesza.

Unlike Gerrard, Bento has managed two national teams. The 53-year-old took charge of his home nation Portugal back in 2010 and enjoyed an impressive run to the Euro 2012 semi-finals in his first major tournament.

Bento's Portugal qualified for the 2014 World Cup in South Africa but failed to progress past the group stage.

The former defensive midfielder was sacked shortly after. The main reason for his departure was a home defeat to Albania at the start of their Euro 2016 qualifying campaign.

Bento found work with Cruzeiro, Olympiacos and Chongqing Dangdai Lifan before becoming the manager of South Korea in 2018.

He led the Taegeuk Warriors to the 2022 World Cup and even beat his former side Portugal 2-1 in order to progress to the knockout stage.

South Korea were beaten 4-1 by Brazil in their first round-of-16 match in 12 years. Bento left his role after the tournament, saying he wanted to take a break.

According to TVP, Bento will be appointed as Poland's next manager following the departure of former boss Czeslaw Michniewicz.
