Sandro Tonali 'distraught' after authorities question him while on duty with Italy
Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali experienced profound distress when he faced authorities' questioning during his international duties.
Italy's manager, Luciano Spalletti, revealed this emotional turmoil, as Tonali and his international teammate, Nicolo Zaniolo, found themselves entangled in an alleged illicit betting investigation.
Following notification of their involvement in a probe by Turin prosecutors, both players departed Italy's training camp in Coverciano last Thursday.
The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) released a statement last week, indicating that Tonali and Zaniolo were not in the "right condition" to participate in crucial Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and England. Consequently, they were permitted to return to their respective clubs.
Although specific details of Tonali's interrogation remain undisclosed, Spalletti was once again questioned about the incident before Italy's significant match against England at Wembley on Tuesday night.
"It was traumatic for the team because we had the authorities almost coming into the dressing room," Spalletti told reporters.
"Everyone was surprised. Everyone was upset, but we had almost a whole day from when we said goodbye to them and some of us were even able to give them a hug before they went home.
"The players themselves [Tonali and Zaniolo] were absolutely distraught because when you are part of a national team, very strong ties and bonds are created.
"After the results, the one other thing that you keep with you for the rest of your life is the lasting relationships that you make in the national team set-up.
"We are committed to keep speaking to these players. We will continue to keep an eye on them and try and provide them with all the help, information and support that we can to make sure that they can then go back to doing what they enjoy the most."
