Real Madrid eye defensive overhaul: Ferland Mendy set for departure
The upcoming summer transfer window promises to be a whirlwind of activity at Real Madrid.
Beyond the ongoing Kylian Mbappe saga, the Santiago Bernabeu looks set to witness significant movements in positions extending beyond the frontline.
The spotlight is now on the left-back position. According to 'The Athletic', it's highly likely that Ferland Mendy, a mainstay since his arrival in 2019, will pack his bags and embark on a new chapter after four successful seasons.
Despite recent struggles with injuries, there's no questioning the performance and consistency of the French international. Carlo Ancelotti, in particular, values Mendy's defensive prowess. However, it appears that the 28-year-old, who also attracts interest from Saudi football, may not see out his contract, which runs until June 2025.
Real Madrid deem this an opportune moment, considering Mendy's current form and the club's future vision, to place the Frenchman on the market.
By doing so before his contract expires, they can secure funds that would facilitate the pursuit of two top priorities: either David Alaba from Bayern Munich or the Girona-loaned Miguel Gutierrez.
Clearly, the arrival of either would likely signal the end of Mendy's tenure, as he is not inclined to accept a role as a substitute.
The summer transfer window at Real Madrid is poised for a defensive makeover, with Mendy's departure triggering a bid for defensive reinforcements.
