Pep Guardiola hails 'special' Man City team after dramatic comeback seals Premier League title
Pep Guardiola would not be drawn on a contract extension but would reveal that his immediate plans involve getting to the golf course as soon as possible.
Pep Guardiola was understandably delighted after Manchester City fought back from 2-0 down against Aston Villa to claim a 3-2 final day win that clinched a fourth Premier League title in five years for the team.
An incredible comeback sparked by the introduction of Ilkay Gundogan saw Manchester City rattle in three goals in four minutes to snatch the title and break Liverpool hearts.
Guardiola hailed what he described as a special group of players who have consistently delivered over the last five incredible seasons.
They will be remembered forever
Manchester City have demonstrated themselves to be a team not only of great skill and quality but also a resilient unit with grit and character.
Guardiola said that the achievements were down to the special group of players assembled at the Etihad.
"These guys are legends. When you win in this country four times in five years, it is because these guys are so special. They will be remembered forever," Guardiola said.
An emotional Guardiola admitted that the final day was a nerve-wracking affair as they almost let Liverpool steal the trophy out from under their noses.
"The last game is special. A lot of emotion against a good Aston Villa team. We are playing in non normal circumstances. We had to handle it," he said.
"After their second goal it was really difficult. It was 'get the first goal', then we had momentum and our people did the rest.
"Gundo is the best runner we have. After we equalised, we had the feeling we could score again. Winning at home with our fans is the best."
Paying tribute to Liverpool
Guardiola gave credit to his great rivals Liverpool, once again saying that they help his team become even better.
"I've never see a team like Liverpool in my life.
"I know how tough it is but they help us be a better team season by season. Big congratulations to them," Guardiola added.
"The rivals here are so tough. It was a real tough two months in the Champions League and in the Premier League. But we are champions again."
Guardiola deflected a question about a contract extension at Manchester City, indicating that he had an early tee time.
"Now golf! I need it!" a smiling Guardiola said.
