Mitrovic breaks Championship record but he still has a long way to go to surpass Boro legend
Aleksandar Mitrovic broke the Championship goalscoring record for a single season with his two goals in Fulham’s 2-1 win over Peterborough.
A typically clinical brace took the Serbian striker past the previous record of 31, set by Brentford's Ivan Toney only last season.
Mitrovic's 33 goals to date have come in just 30 Championship appearances, with three hat-tricks and a further five two-goal hauls.
With almost half a season to run, there are plenty of other records in Mitrovic's sights, including the first 40-goal English League season since 1992/93, when Guy Whittingham scored 42 for Portsmouth. Whittingham's tally was set in the First Division (now the Championship), and still wasn't good enough to see Pompey promoted.
But despite his stellar form, Mitro has a long way to go to break the record for the second tier, which has stood since 1927 and stands at a remarkable 59!
That mark was set by Middlesbrough and England striker George Camsell - a true legend of the game, but one you are probably unaware of.
The 1926/27 season was the second season in succession that the English goalscoring record was broken as the year before the previous mark had been set at 44 by Chesterfield's Jimmy Cookson.
And before you say, yeah but he probably played about 50 games...not so. Camsell set his mark from just 37 Division Two games, which will be a similar figure to the number of games Mitrovic will play this term.
Camsell scored nine-league hat-tricks in his record-breaking season, as he became the highest scorer over one season in English history.
Unfortunately for Camsell, that record was broken by Everton's Dixie Dean who scored 60 the following season.
Camsell, though, did get a measure of revenge on Dean as within two years he had replaced him as England's centre-forward.
And arguably he achieved even bigger feats for The Three Lions as he bagged a remarkable 18 goals in nine games for England - nobody in history has a better goalscoring ratio.
So while we should celebrate Mitrovic's Championship record, let's not crown him for something he is still some way from achieving. Surpassing Camsell's record looks extremely unlikely but then again this is Mitro we are talking about!
