Mesut Ozil to become an 'eSports athlete' upon retirement, says German's agent

Mesut Ozil could become an 'eSports athlete' after retirement

Mesut Ozil was recently removed from Fenerbahce's first team squad, and his agent believes a drastic career change could be on the horizon.

Former Real Madrid and Arsenal midfielder Mesut Ozil is currently plying his trade in Turkey with Super Lig side Fenerbahce.

But while the 33-year-old German is contracted to the club, he hasn't actually stepped foot onto a pitch for a few months.

Ozil was removed from Fenerbahce's first team squad for disciplinary reasons, and a comeback looks unlikely for the World Cup winner.
As a result, Ozil could turn to retirement sooner rather than later, and his agent Dr Erkut Sogut believes there's other career paths his client would like to pursue.
According to Sogut, Ozil is an extremely talented gamer, and a career in the booming industry of eSports seems to catch the German's attention.
"He will go more into eSports, play himself and maybe become an eSports athlete," said Dr Sogut.
"He's really good, to be honest, at Fortnite and I think one day I wouldn't be surprised if he is competing.
"He owns a team - M10 Esports - and he has players. He has a gaming house in Germany. He has football, like FIFA, and Fortnite."

Ozil's removal from the first team at Fenerbahce came down to arguments over playing time, with the former Arsenal man falling out with manager Ismail Kartal.

He was a key player for the side in 2020/21 season scoring nine goals and registering three assists in all competitions. But his role was limited much more last season, and Ozil's half-time substitution against Konyaspor was his latest appearance for the side.
Ozil isn't the only football star to own an eSports team either, with Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea owning his 'Rebels Gaming' team, while Jesse Lingard, Sergio Aguero and David Beckham have also started up their own teams.
Could we see Ozil switch boots for a controller? If his agent's words are anything to go by, then absolutely.
