Martin Zubimendi breaks silence on decision to remain at Real Sociedad

Martin Zubimendi has finally addressed his choice to stay at Real Sociedad despite initially agreeing to join Liverpool, leading to a transfer saga that the Reds would have preferred to avoid.

Liverpool's search for a defensive midfielder has been a long-standing issue, and it seemed they were on the verge of resolving it this summer. However, persuading Zubimendi to leave his lifelong club proved too challenging, as Real Sociedad launched a concerted effort to retain the Euro winner.

Zubimendi's decision to stay leaves Liverpool still in need of a No. 6, but his recent comments to Marca underscore the depth of his commitment to his current club.

When asked about his connection to Real Sociedad, the 25-year-old midfielder said, "Real Sociedad for me is my life, I think I have spent half my life there. A lot of what I am is part of La Real, it is my life."

Despite the intense efforts from Sociedad to highlight his importance to the team, Zubimendi noted that his friends did not exert the same pressure on him.

Regarding his friends' reaction to the summer's developments, he shared, "No, no, my friends are clear that whatever I decide will be the best. There is no pressure whatsoever."

Zubimendi, who joined Real Sociedad's academy at the age of 12 in 2011, has previously turned down offers from Bayern Munich and Arsenal to remain with his boyhood club.

While Liverpool have secured three consecutive victories at the start of the season, Zubimendi's Sociedad has won only one of their first four matches, leaving them 12th in La Liga with just four points.

Although many have moved on from Zubimendi following his summer decision, there are suggestions that Liverpool may revisit the possibility of signing him in the future. A recent parallel is Virgil van Dijk's move to Anfield in January 2018, where the Reds remained persistent in pursuing their top target. However, any future attempt would still hinge on convincing Zubimendi to leave a club he describes as "my life."
