Gareth Southgate pleased with England’s resilience as Three Lions pass Swiss test
England manager Gareth Southgate was left pleased with his team after the Three Lions fought back from a goal down to earn a 2-1 win over Switzerland.
Breel Embolo grabbed the opening goal as the visitors took an early 1-0 lead at Wembley stadium.
However, just as the Swiss seemed to be heading for the half-time interval with their one-goal lead in-tact, Luke Shaw came to the rescue with a thumping strike.
The hosts sealed the win in the second-half as Harry Kane converted a 78th minute penalty to extend England's unbeaten run - in normal time - to 21 games.
Speaking after the match, Southgate praised the character of his players saying: "I think they've got pride in the way they've been playing and we talked last year about that and about their record last year.
"Of course, that can become a hindrance if you just focus on trying to stay unbeaten so the important thing today was how we performed and the test that the opposition gave us.
"And to see some players who perhaps haven't played as often for us and some new players as well, which was a really good exercise for all of them.
"I thought it was a really good test. We went behind, we had tactical problems to solve, we had to defend properly.
"Of course, towards the end of the game we were able to get more experience and some top players onto the pitch, which made us finish strongly as well and that was important for the team and also for the crowd."
England will now turn their attention to Tuesday night and the Ivory Coast as the Three Lions continue their World Cup preparations.
