Ex Arsenal keeper questions title winning ‘personalities’ and backs rivals for Premier League crown
Legendary Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann believes the Premier League title will be won by the team with the best character and personality rather than ability.
Lehmann was a member of Arsenal’s Invincibles and made 148 Premier League appearances for the club.
The Gunners haven’t won the league since Lehmann and his teammates lifted the trophy back in 2003/04.
Mikel Arteta’s men are looking to change that this season, with the club currently involved in a three-horse race for the title.
“This year marks 20 years since the beautiful anniversary of Arsenal winning the English championship,” Lehmann told Polish news outlet WP Sportowe Fakty.
“It would be great if younger colleagues could achieve what we did back then. But what is important is that this competition is no longer just about football skills.
“For me, the title fight will take place, to some extent, in the field of personality. And the question I ask myself is this: are the Arsenal players and coach such personalities that they will win this title?
“They are up against teams like Manchester City and Liverpool, with personalities like Guardiola and Klopp.”
Arsenal are currently third in the standings but sit right on the coat tails of Liverpool and Manchester City.
Despite this, Lehmann is leaning towards the defending champions as the title race continues to unfold.
He added: “Manchester City has the most consistent, complete team in every respect. However, if Arsenal managed to do this, I would be very happy.
“Because it's a big club, and a big club should win championships. 20 years without a title is a long time.”
