Espanyol dismiss manager Diego Martinez following disappointing spell in La Liga
After just 31 games in charge of Los Pericos, Espanyol have sacked Diego Martinez from his position as manager of the La Liga outfit.
Martinez arrived at the club in July 2022 with high expectations of leading them to a top-half finish in the following season. However, throughout his tenure, he never managed to build a strong relationship with the club.
Martinez's problems started with a falling out with Raul de Tomas, the star striker, over the summer. Subsequently, the team experienced inconsistent results due to several errors, despite Joselu Mato and Martin Braithwaite scoring a total of 21 goals this season.
The team failed to put together a run of convincing performances, and their performance in Copa del Rey resulted in their exit to Athletic Clubs.
The former Granada manager's record of nine wins, nine draws, and 13 defeats fell far below expectations.
The club statement acknowledged Martinez's work and expressed gratitude for his contribution, but the decision to dismiss him was to ensure their stay in La Liga this season.
In the current La Liga standings, Espanyol are placed 17th after 27 games on 27 points.
Former striker Luis Garcia is expected to take over from Martinez. Despite his unimpressive tenure with Espanyol, Martinez remains highly rated, and he is likely to get further opportunities in La Liga.
