Deadline Day: Aaron Ramsey completes shock move to Rangers on eve of Old Firm derby

Aaron Ramsey of Juventus smiles during the UEFA Champions League Group H football match between Zenit St. Petersburg and Juventus FC on October 20, 2021

Aaron Ramsey will spend the remainder of his season in Scotland after securing a loan move to Rangers on deadline day.

The ex-Arsenal midfielder joins the Scottish champions from Juventus and could make his debut in the Old Firm Derby away at Celtic on Wednesday.

Ramsey made 70 appearances for the Old Lady across his two-and-a-half seasons at the Allianz Stadium.

However, with just five of those appearances coming this season, both Ramsey and Juventus were keen to agree a move during the January transfer window.

Ramsey told the Rangers website: "I am really pleased to be joining a club like Rangers, where there is so much to look forward to between now and May.

"I had a number of offers on the table but none matched the magnitude of this club, with European football and the chance to play in front of 50,000 fans every other week.
"I have had some fantastic conversations with the manager and Ross Wilson (sporting director), and I'm really looking forward to working with both of them and to meeting the supporters."

Manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst, himself a former Arsenal player, said: "As soon as it was mooted as a possibility, I was really keen for us to try everything to get the deal done and huge credit must go to Ross and to the board for the work they have put in on this."

Players of Ramsey's calibre don't come cheap, but Rangers have assured fans that the deal meets the club's wage model.

Juventus will cover a large chunk of Ramsey's weekly wage, which is reportedly around £400,000.
Sporting director Ross Wilson said: "I am thankful to Juventus for their professional approach and discretion. Juventus and Aaron had many significant offers from elsewhere and we are delighted that he has chosen Rangers.
"Any agreement we reach has to be within our normal wage model and Aaron's desire to play here has enabled us to achieve this with Juventus's co-operation."
