Borussia Dortmund faced their first setback of the year, settling for a goalless draw against FC Heidenheim in a Bundesliga showdown on Friday night.

Heidenheim appeared more threatening in the early exchanges, keeping the Dortmund defence on their toes in front of a packed Voith-Arena. Despite this, it was Dortmund who seemed to break the deadlock with Donyell Malen's strike in the 26th minute, only to have it disallowed due to a contentious offside decision.

Despite a spirited effort in the second half, notably Niclas Fullkrug's late attempt, Dortmund failed to capitalize on their possession.

Speaking after the match, Borussia Dortmund's coach Edin Terzic expressed disappointment, stating, "We didn't deserve more than this one point. In the second period in particular, we had a lot of possession but no penetration... It is our ambition to play better football and create more chances."

Striker Niclas Fullkrug echoed Terzic's sentiments, acknowledging, "It is of course not enough. We wanted to take three points... We're a team that's in a process. A lot of players are also missing. But all of that is not an excuse; we need to do better."

Goalkeeper Alexander Meyer also voiced his dissatisfaction, remarking, "We didn't have enough goalscoring threat. It was clearly not enough today."

The draw sees Dortmund holding onto fourth place in the Bundesliga standings with 37 points from 20 games, while Heidenheim sit in ninth place with 24 points. However, both teams remain far behind league-leaders Bayer Leverkusen, who currently top the table with 49 points, indicating the competitive nature of the league this season.
