Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo reacts to Copa del Rey exit

In the wake of Barcelona's 4-2 Copa del Rey exit at San Mames against Athletic Club, Ronald Araujo, the newly appointed team captain, wasted no time in addressing the media.

Expressing disappointment at the setback, Araujo acknowledged the challenge of bowing out of the Copa del Rey but commended the team's relentless effort despite the numerous setbacks, particularly in terms of player absences.

"It's disheartening to be knocked out; we wanted to compete for this title," Araujo conveyed to Television Espanola. "Athletic is a formidable opponent, especially on their home turf where the crowd is a significant force. What I take away is that we competed throughout. Despite numerous absences and young players having to step up, we demonstrated character," he analysed.

The Uruguayan also aimed a critique at Jules Kounde and Sergi Roberto, the primary culprits behind Athletic's third goal. "We lacked the goal in extra time, and perhaps we could have been more intelligent in the 3-2 action, considering there was only a minute left in the first half," he pointed out.

Throughout his comments, Araujo shifted his discourse, seeking the optimistic aspects of the situation. "It's always a tough blow to be out of a competition, but we have to keep fighting. Two competitions remain – La Liga and the Champions League. Naples is up next, and we have home games. We must press on and find positive vibes," he declared.

Sending a clear message as captain, Ronald insisted that two titles are still within reach, and the team will fight until the end "for this shirt."

When asked about Lamine Yamal's missed chances, Araujo expressed sympathy, stating, "It's unfortunate he missed those two chances, but there's no need for reproach. He's only 16, and surely many more goals will come."
