Pulisic and Steffen must move for the sake of their careers, says Friedel

Liverpool the ideal destination for Chelsea outcast, while Man City No. 2 needs experience.

Christian Pulisic should put an end to his Chelsea heartache and join Liverpool.

That is the opinion of ex-Liverpool keeper Brad Friedel.

The former Red knows all about the frustration of sitting on the bench having made just 30 appearances in a three-year stay at Anfield. And he thinks Pulisic, who has struggled for game-time under Thomas Tuchel, would be ideally suited to Jurgen Klopp's style of play.

Friedel eventually went on to make close to 500 Premier League appearances in a career which took in Blackburn Rovers, Aston Villa and Tottenham, so he is ideally placed to assess the prospects of Pulisic.

As he is of fellow USA talent Zack Steffen who is fighting a losing battle with Ederson for the No.1 spot at Manchester City.

With the summer transfer window just around the corner, Friedel spoke about what the future could hold for two of USA's emerging stars in an exclusive interview with CardsChat.

Friedel found minutes hard to come by at Liverpool

Pulisic would suit Liverpool's playing style

"Pulisic has the potential to be the most successful American player in mainland Europe," said Friedel, who admitted it was still too early to assess what role the 22-year-old would have under Tuchel.
"At the beginning of the season, he was unplayable at times and doing really, really well."
Pulisic has found himself on the fringes at Stamford Bridge while new boss Tuchel assesses what he has got at his disposal. However, he made an impressive return to the starting line-up in the FA Cup win over Sheffield United.

Rumours of a move still persist, however, and Friedel can see why Liverpool are being linked with the former Borussia Dortmund player.

Jurgen Klopp talks with Pulisic ahead of March's Premier League clash

"I think Liverpool's system is a good one for Christian, without a doubt. He's very quick, his first steps are quick and even when he gets going, he's very quick.
"The pressing style that Jurgen Klopp likes to play under, then the quick counter-attack and the runs through the lines, I think he would be able to perform very well in that system. Again, I have no idea if that's a player that they're looking at, but that type of system would be ideal for someone like Christian."

Steffen needs to leave Manchester City to progress

Another American who has found himself on the sidelines more often than not this season is Zack Steffen.
The 25-year-old has made just one Premier League appearance as he waits in the wings behind a keeper Friedel rates "the best in the world".
"He has the fortunate and unfortunate scenario of seeing Ederson on a day-to-day basis, but unfortunate that he's playing behind, who I think is the best in the world. So, at some stage he's going to have to play football."
So where could Manchester City's back-up goalkeeper go?
Friedel, while not naming any specific clubs, was in agreement that Steffen could operate lower down the Premier League, in order to "get the experience".

No matter where the former Colombus Crew shotstopper ends up, Friedel has no doubt he has all the attributes to enjoy a successful career in the top flight.

"He's good enough technically" and "he has all the tools without a doubt".

Manchester City's domestic cup keeper, Steffen is certain to have a part to play in the closing stages of the season as Pep Guardiola's side chase an unprecedented quadruple.

One of those trophies is the FA Cup, with City facing Pulisic's Chelsea in the semi-final on April 17.

However, with a busy summer schedule in store for the USMNT, there is only one outcome Friedel is looking for from the tie, especially when it comes to Pulisic.

"He is our best attacking player, and we've got a few of them. We need him to stay injury free, that's for sure," added Friedel.
