Brazil vs Argentina verdict

Brazil will play against Argentina in the 6th round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro with both teams in need of three points.

Argentina’s 2-0 defeat against Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay was their first defeat since Saudi Arabia shocked them almost 12 months ago.

Brazil lost to Colombia after Gabriel Martinelli's early goal was cancelled out by Luis Diaz's quickfire double.

The team led by Fernando Diniz had previously lost to Uruguay (0-2) and drawn with Venezuela (1-1) at home, before losing to Colombia.

Brazil have picked up just seven points in five rounds of the competition, placing them in fifth place, one point behind Venezuela and five points behind the leaders, Argentina.

In contrast, Argentina suffered their first loss as world champions. Messi and his teammates did not have many opportunities in the match against their neighbours Uruguay in Buenos Aires.

Ronaldo Araujo opened the scoring for Uruguay in the first half. The hosts chased the game for more than 40 minutes before Darwin Nunez doubled the lead late on.

Argentina previously had a perfect qualifying record under Lionel Scaloni, winning their first four games. Despite the defeat, they remain top of the group.

In the 109 matches between the two, Brazil have the edge with 43 wins. However, Argentina has had the upper hand in recent years.

The previous World Cup qualifier between Brazil and Argentina was a 0-0 draw in San Juan, Argentina.

In the reverse fixture during the same qualifying campaign, Argentina managed a 1-0 win.

In 2021, Argentina and Brazil faced off in the Copa America final, which Argentina won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Angel Di María.

Not only have Scaloni’s side had the upper hand, but they’ve often shut Brazil out and the last six meetings have had 2.5 goals scored.
