Newcastle vs Crystal Palace tips and predictions: One goal to determine mid-table showdown

Eddie Howe

Newcastle have been involved in high-scoring belters over recent weeks, though Robbie Savage exepcts the Premier League’s third-best defence – Crystal Palace – to turn this into a quiet affair.

I’m not expecting goals. In the last four meetings between these two teams, there’s only been one goal from open play.

It’ll be a tight encounter. It’s at St James’ Park. I’m going for the only goal of the game to Newcastle.

Robbie’s Tip: Newcastle 1-0 Crystal Palace

Team news

Harvey Barnes won’t be available for Newcastle this weekend. There are also question marks over Sven Botman, Alexander Isak, Joelinton and Joe Willock.

Sandro Tonali is subject to investigation by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office over illegal bettin activity. While the player is, on paper, eligible to play this weekend, Eddie Howe may opt to leave the Italian on the sidelines considering the ongoing situation.

Palace, on the other hand, will be without Naouirou Ahamada, Eberechi Eze, Nathan Ferguson and Dean Henderson.

Cheick Doucoure, Jefferson Lerma, Matheus Franca, Michael Olise, Jairo Riedewald, Jeffery Schlupp and Joel Ward are all doubts ahead of the weekend.

Key stats

- From the last four meetings there’s only been one goal (not counting the penalty shoot-out in the cup)

- Last two PL meetings have been goalless

- No one has kept more clean sheets in the PL this season than Palace (4)

- Newcastle have conceded just 17 goals at home in the league since the start of last season

Eight goals against Sheffield United, two against Burnley, four against PSG, two away at West Ham – it’s fair to say that Newcastle are very comfortable when it comes to scoring goals in recent weeks.

Trouble is, this weekend they’re taking on a Crystal Palace side which doesn’t entertain this type of free-scoring football.

Their last three Premier League outings have seen just one goal scored which came in their victory over Man United at Old Trafford.

Only Arsenal and Man City boast a better defensive record than Palace in the Premier League this season, with the Eagles conceding just seven goals across eight games.

Historically speaking, Newcastle and Palace tends to be a low-scoring fixture anyway. The under 2.5 goals bet has landed in 13 of the previous 14 meetings.

Six of those matches saw only one goal scored, while four were goalless.

Bearing all that in mind, we’re backing another drab affair. However, with Palace facing a number of injury worries and Newcastle enjoying solid form, the Magpies are the ones to back.
