Crystal Palace chairman 'astounded' by lack of transfer interest in Eberechi Eze
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish says he is extremely surprised by the lack of interest in Eberechi Eze during the transfer window.
Greenwich-born Eze has spent the entirety of his professional footballing career playing in or close to London at QPR, Wycombe and Crystal Palace.
He has made well over 200 appearances in professional club football and has broken into the England team.
Eze had an eventful youth career that was full of ups and downs.
He began his youth career at Arsenal in 2006 and remained in their academy set-up until he was released in 2011 at the age of 13.
Eze stayed in London, joining the Fulham youth set-up from 2011 to 2013 and he followed this up with a brief stint in the Reading academy in 2014.
He would then go on to sign a two-year scholarship with Millwall later in 2014 but left the club in 2016 after not being offered a professional contract.
Just four months after being released by Millwall, Eze had a successful trial at fellow London club Queens Park Rangers and went on to sign his first contract with them in August 2016.
Eze made his professional debut for QPR at the age of 18 on January 7, 2017, in the club’s 2-1 defeat to Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup third-round at Loftus Road.
Unfortunately, this was not the first appearance in senior football that Eze would have dreamt about growing up as he was forced off the pitch with an injury after just 18 minutes.
Despite his rather brief appearance in the FA Cup third-round being his only one in the entirety of the 2016/17 campaign, Eze signed two-year contract extension with the club in the summer of 2017.
At the end of August 2017, he joined then League Two side Wycombe Wanderers for a six-month loan spell.
His debut for the club and first-ever league appearance came in a goalless draw against Newport County on September 9, 2017. Eze scored his first-ever goals in professional football when he netted twice for Wycombe in their 3-1 victory over Cambridge United.
If the plan was for Eze to get plenty of game-time and gain valuable experience, then it worked out as he went on to make 22 appearances in all competitions and his contributions to the club were not bad either as he managed to bag five goals.
The second-half of the 2017/18 season was when Eze became regular in the QPR team with him making 16 appearances between January and May. His first goal for QPR came in the club’s 1-0 triumph over Sunderland on March 10, 2018.
Before the 2018/19 season got underway, Eze was given the number 10 shirt by new manager Steve McClaren and he signed three-year contract extension with QPR meaning he would be contracted to the club until the summer of 2021.
Eze went on to make 46 appearances in all competitions in 2018/19 campaign and contributed four goals and four assists.
The 2019/20 season turned out to be a real breakthrough one for Eze as his performances and numbers completely blossomed for QPR in the Championship.
He ended the campaign with an impressive 14 goals and eight assists in England’s second-tier and he did this for a team who finished 13th-placed of the league table. His stellar campaign earned him the QPR Supporters’ Player of the Year Award and a place in the EFL Championship Team of the Season.
Eze’s impressive performances did not go unnoticed and it turned out to be his last season with QPR as he earned himself a Premier League move in the summer of 2020.
Eze signed for Premier League club Crystal Palace on a five-year deal on August 28, 2020.
He made his debut for the Eagles from the bench in the 81st minute in the club’s 1-0 victory over Southampton in the Premier League on September 12, 2020.
His first goal for the club turned out to be a quality free-kick in Palace’s 4-1 victory over Leeds United at Selhurst Park on November 7, 2020.
The 2020/21 campaign was largely positive for Eze as he contributed four goals and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions but it would unfortunately end with him picking up an Achillies injury which would rule him out of action for several months.
Due to the severe injury that Eze picked up in May 2021, the 2021/22 campaign was largely one of frustration for Eze as his injury issues only allowed him to make 13 appearances in all competitions and he managed to contribute one goal and one assist.
The 2022/23 season saw Eze shake off his injury issues and recapture his electric form. Eze appeared in all 38 of Palace’s Premier League games and ended the campaign as the club’s top goal-scorer with 10 goals in total and he also provided four assists.
Despite being of Nigerian ancestry and constantly debating which country to represent at senior international level, Eze has now made two senior appearances for the senior England national team.
Eze’s first taste of international football at youth level came when he was called up to the England Under-20s team in October 2018.
He also made his debut later in the month in 2-1 victory over Italy in the Under 20 Elite League. He was given the honour of captaining England’s under-20s team in a 2-1 defeat to Chile in the Toulon Tournament in June 2019.
He was called up to the England Under-21s team in September 2019 and he would eventually make his debut in a 3-0 victory against Albania.
Eze was selected in the squad for the 2021 UEFA European Under-21 Championships; scoring in England’s final group-stage game against Croatia.
The midfielder was a rather surprising selection for the England senior national team’s 33-man provisional squad for Euro 2020 but his Achillies injury stopped him from having any chance of making the final squad.
He would have to wait until May 2023 to get his next call-up and he made his debut in when coming off the bench in the Three Lions’ 4-0 victory over Malta in a UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier on June 16, 2023.
Eze married his long-term girlfriend Izuthe Mulatto in May 2022.
He has two brothers who both play football. Ikechi Eze plays for Aveley FC and had spells at Stranraer and Braintree Town, while youngest brother Chimaechi Eze joined the Crystal Palace academy at the start of the 2023/24 season.
He is a Christian and related to American comedian and Saturday Night Live cast member Ego Nwodim.
Eze is on £47,000 a week at Crystal Palace and his net worth is around £9million.
Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish says he is extremely surprised by the lack of interest in Eberechi Eze during the transfer window.
Eberechi Eze's second-half strike was enough to hold Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.
Eberechi Eze has called for calm as England were booed off the pitch following their uninspiring 1-1 draw with Denmark at Euro 2024.
Red-hot Crystal Palace will hope to end the season on a high when they host Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon (1600 BST).
Selhurst Park will be bouncing about the possibility of a third-consecutive win when Newcastle United visit in Premier League action on Thursday.
Crystal Palace dealt a heavy blow to West Ham’s ambitions of playing European football next season with a 5-2 victory at Selhurst Park.
Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes were dealt a serious blow as Eberechi Eze scored the only goal in Crystal Palace’s shock 1-0 win at Anfield.
