New York City vs Charlotte FC verdict
New York City are fresh off a 1-0 win over Montreal on the road, which is a pretty impressive result given their form.
The hosts were winless in 12 matches before that and the Canadians rarely concede a goal at home.
On paper, Charlotte FC also look out of form after going five matches without a win. However, they've only lost in three of 10 and five of 17.
Their most recent defeats came away to Philadelphia Union and Columbus Crew while they also lost at home to Nashville.
You probably accept losing to those three teams given where Charlotte is in comparison. They were competitive in all three matches and scored three goals.
Scoring goals has become a problem for City. Their 2-2 draw in Atlanta aside, they haven't found the net more than once a 3-2 defeat to Charlotte in May.
Gabriel Pereira remains their leading scorer with just six goals to his name, backed up by Santiago Rodriguez with four goals and three assists.
However, the visitors have gotten away with overperforming for a significant part of this season and so we view their recent results in a different light.
Looking at xG we can see Charlotte has scored five more away goals than we'd have expected based on their quality of chance.
Justin Meram and Karol Swiderski have combined to score seven goals in their previous seven away matches.
A team can be clinical, but things tend to catch up eventually. The number of goals they're conceding makes this a good opportunity for City to score more than once.
Prior to facing four of the best teams in the league at home, New York had won three of their opening four and drew with Atlanta.
Charlotte's wins on the road were largely down to red cards and penalties going in their favour. This looks like a good opportunity for City to get back on track.
