Euro 2024: Austria vs Turkey tips and predictions - Turkiye carved open and stuffed

Austria celebration

Austria, one of the standout teams of Euro 2024 so far, face Turkey in the Round of 16 at Euro 2024 on Tuesday night (2000 BST).

Austria and Turkey will conclude the Round of 16 on Tuesday night as they scrap it out for the right to face Romania or Netherlands in the quarter-finals.

With five of the likeliest priced winners residing on the opposite side of the draw, this is a rare opportunity for these nations to make the final of a major tournament.

Except for Switzerland, no team on the same side of the draw has shown any real promise, and we think Austria in particular could sneak a semi-final spot.

They looked well organised when losing 1-0 to France, before winning their remaining group matches in style, most notably beating the Netherlands 3-2.

Given the quality of the passing moves they put together in their last match, you’d be forgiven for mistaking them for Spanish. We think they’ll be able to slice this Turkey open. Ha.

Turkey tend to bottle tournaments and, despite having some exciting players, we aren’t sold on them being much of a force.

Georgia’s kamikaze approach made winning their opening group match more likely, yet they so nearly didn’t. Equally, they only beat the Czech Republic because of circumstances.

The Czechs had been down to 10 men for 70 minutes and were pushing for a winner when Cenk Tosun settled the match in injury time.

Turkey have been wildly unpredictable in recent years but one common thread is their inability to defend.

They pack a punch, but Germany, Portugal, Poland, Japan and Latvia are among the sides to score at least two against them, while Austria beat them 6-1 in March.

There’s a massive mental component to being on the wrong end of a thrashing like that at this level, and while revenge would be sweet, the Austrians know they can win this.

Team news

Patrick Wimmer will serve a one-match suspension for Austria for receiving two yellow cards, meaning Christoph Baumgartner could return.

Marcel Sabitzer was superb against Poland and the Netherlands as he created a handful of chances and scored a goal.

Gernot Trauner and Max Wober have struggled to hold down a place in the defence and further changes could be afoot.

Arda Guler has stood out for Turkey in Germany yet the talented youngster doesn’t seem a certainty to start.

In a major blow for the Turks, Hakan Calhanoglou and Samet Aykadin will serve a one-match suspension.
