Bayern Munich eye rising star Florian Wirtz in heated transfer battle with Barcelona

Florian Wirtz

Bayern Munich are reportedly set to give Barcelona a run for their money in the race to secure the services of Bayer Leverkusen's emerging sensation, Florian Wirtz.

Barcelona, the La Liga champions, have had their eyes on the 20-year-old prodigy for quite some time, monitoring his meteoric rise with great interest. A recent report by BILD has revealed that Wirtz is among the top talents on Barcelona's three-man transfer shortlist, standing alongside Royal Antwerp's Arthur Vermeeren and Porto's Alan Varela.

However, Barcelona are not the only giant lurking in the shadows. Bayern Munich, eager to bolster their attacking prowess, are keen on bringing the German international to the renowned Allianz Arena. Their grand vision is to form a formidable attacking duo by uniting Wirtz with his compatriot, Jamal Musiala.

The recent international match between Germany and the USA, where both Wirtz and Musiala featured prominently in Germany's 3-1 victory, gave Bayern a tantalizing glimpse of the potential these young talents hold. With both players aged just 20, Bayern see them as key figures for their squad's future.

The young Wirtz remains level-headed amidst the whirlwind of transfer speculations, emphasizing his commitment to Bayer Leverkusen. In a statement to BILD, he reassured fans, saying, "We're having a very good season with Leverkusen so far, it's fun at the club. That's why I'm only thinking about Leverkusen.

"I still have a pretty long contract. That's why I don't need to worry about my future at the moment."

It's worth noting that Wirtz's current contract, extending until the summer of 2027, does not include a release clause, quashing any hopes of an easy transfer.

To pry the young maestro away from Leverkusen's grasp, it would reportedly require a hefty sum in the neighbourhood of €100 million (£86.5 million). Leverkusen, well aware of Wirtz's immense potential, are determined to retain one of their most prized assets.

Nevertheless, Barcelona are currently grappling with financial woes, and their ability to meet Leverkusen's valuation remains questionable. This financial struggle might just give Bayern Munich an edge in the fierce contest for Wirtz's signature.

Wirtz has embarked on the 2023-24 season with great promise, already contributing three goals and four assists in just ten competitive matches. His journey from the youth team of 1. FC Köln, where he began in 2010, to Bayer Leverkusen in January 2020, has been nothing short of remarkable.

Wirtz's senior professional debut for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga came in May 2020, and since then, he has accumulated a solid 26 goals and 34 assists in 113 appearances across all competitions.

The tussle between Bayern Munich and Barcelona for Florian Wirtz's signature promises to be intriguing ahead of the next transfer window in 2024.
