Bayer Leverkusen poised to extend lead as Bayern Munich falter again

Xabi Alonso's Leverkusen side have a golden opportunity to tighten their grip on the title race with a crucial away fixture against Koln on Sunday.

Despite an impressive solo effort by Jamal Musiala, Bayern had to settle for a 2-2 draw as Mathys Tel's goal was countered by strikes from Lucas Holer and Christian Gunter. 

This outcome leaves Bayern trailing in second place with 54 points, while Leverkusen sit comfortably ahead with 61 points and a game in hand.

The match saw Freiburg's early dominance, marked by relentless pressure in the opening half-hour, culminating in an early goal. Reflecting on the game, Bayern coach Tuchel admitted, "We didn't play a good first half-hour. We deserved to be behind." He lamented the team's lack of discipline and organization in crucial moments, acknowledging that Bayern only found their stride after conceding a goal.

Tuchel's assessment didn't point to a lack of effort but rather a lack of tactical discipline. He noted instances of positional indiscipline and rushed attacks, leading to vulnerabilities in defence. Despite a spirited second-half display, Bayern couldn't capitalize on their momentum, ultimately falling short of securing a win.

The Bayern coach's frustration was evident as he pondered on what went wrong: "I don't think it was a matter of will. I could already see the effort in the first half. But we were undisciplined in the positions." Tuchel emphasized the need for consistency throughout the game, highlighting that a single strong half isn't sufficient at this level of competition.

As Leverkusen eye a significant lead at the summit of the Bundesliga, Bayern face the challenge of regaining momentum to keep pace in the title race.
