Bayer Leverkusen optimistic Xabi Alonso will stay amid Bayern Munich and Liverpool interest
Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes remains confident in retaining Xabi Alonso as the head coach despite interest from football giants Bayern Munich and Liverpool.
Rolfes, expressing his optimism, highlighted the importance of a coach feeling comfortable and reiterated Alonso's acknowledgment of his satisfaction at Leverkusen. "He has often said that. That's how he works every day with his team and his coaching staff," Rolfes stated in an interview with Frankfurter Rundschau.
Downplaying potential moves, Rolfes added, "There are many subjunctives in the world. Not all of them have to happen."
Sky Germany reports Alonso's openness to joining Bayern, with Leverkusen likely to demand €15-25 million if he decides to make a summer move. On the other side, Liverpool have reportedly reached out to Alonso's agent, Inaki Ibanez.
In the ongoing 2023-24 season, Alonso has steered Leverkusen to set a new German record with an unbeaten streak of 33 consecutive competitive matches. This remarkable run includes flawless performances in Bundesliga, DFB Pokal, and the UEFA Europa League.
In cup competitions, Leverkusen boast a perfect 10-0 record, maintaining a 100% win rate in both the DFB Pokal and the Europa League.
In Bundesliga, they have triumphed in 19 out of 23 matches, securing an eight-point lead over reigning champions Bayern Munich, who have held the league title for the past 11 consecutive seasons.
Alonso's coaching brilliance has not only led to on-field success but has also attracted attention from top football clubs vying for his expertise.
