After spending most of his professional career at Leicester City, Harvey Barnes is hoping to make a splash at Newcastle.

Harvey Barnes plays as a winger for Newcastle United and the England national side.

Barnes joined Leicester as a nine-year-old in 2007 and it took him three successful loan spells with MK Dons, Barnsley and West Brom to finally break into the Leicester first-team squad in 2019.

He won the 2021 FA Cup with Leicester and made 187 appearances and scored 45 goals for the club before joining Newcastle in a deal worth £38million.

Barnes made his England debut in October 2020.

Early career and loan spells

Barnes joined the Leicester City academy at the age of nine in 2007, and signed professional terms in June 2016.

He made his debut that December as a second-half substitute in a Champions League defeat to Porto. He played four EFL games that season before being loaned to MK Dons in January 2017.

He hit the ground running at his new club, scoring on his debut in a 5-3 win over Northampton, then scored again a week later against Peterborough.

Barnes netted six goals in 21 appearances for MK Dons and was given the club's Young Player of the Year award.

He spent half the 2017/18 season at Barnsley, scoring five goals and creating five assists in 25 games for the Yorkshire side, before Leicester recalled him in January 2018.

But it took another three months before Barnes could make an appearance; finally made his Premier League debut in April 2018 as a substitute - although he was only on the field a matter of seconds. He made two further fleeting appearances that campaign.

West Brom took Barnes on loan for the 2018/19 season, but he was once again recalled in January after scoring nine goals, and creating eight assists, in 28 appearances for the Baggies.

Back at Leicester

Leicester's new boss Brendan Rodgers utilised Barnes as a regular member of the first-team squad and he made 16 appearances that season - scoring his first goal for the club in a draw with West Ham in April, 2019.

Barnes continued to progress in a Leicester side that regularly challenged in the top half of the Premier League. He scored seven goals in 42 appearances in the 2019/20 season and then another 13 in 35 games the following season.

However, a knee injury cut short his 2020/21 campaign and he was unable to play in the Leicester's FA Cup final winning team. Although he did collect a medal for his two appearances in the earlier rounds.

Barnes scored 11 goals in the 2021/22 season and a further 13 Premier League goals during the 2022/23 campaign. But was unable to stop the former champions sliding into the Championship on the last game of the season, even though he netted the opener in a 2-1 win over West Ham.

He became hot property with Premier League rivals and his 16-year association with Leicester City came to an end in the summer transfer window.

Barnes at Newcastle

On July 23, 2023, Barnes signed a five-year contract with Newcastle for an undisclosed fee which it is understood could eventually amount to £38million.

Barnes said: "I'm delighted. It's an amazing club and for me it's a massive opportunity to come and be involved in a successful team that's doing exciting things, so I'm absolutely buzzing to be here.

"I think it's an attacker's dream to come into a team like this; it's high paced, it's physically demanding, but you can see the rewards of that with the chances and the goals scored, so I think I'll certainly suit the style."

Magpies' head coach Eddie Howe said: "Harvey is an exciting talent who I have admired for a long time, so I'm delighted to welcome him to Newcastle United.

"He is strong, quick and very good technically, and he showed last season in particular that he has an eye for goal from wide positions.

"He will add a different element to our play and we look forward to working with him as we prepare for the season ahead."

Barnes on the world stage

Barnes played for England at U18, U20 and U21 levels, before making his full international debut as a substitute against Wales in October 2020.

Personal life

Barnes is in a long-term relationship with social media influencer Naomi Dann, who he met at school.

He is the son of former York, Doncaster and Burnley footballer Paul Barnes.

Barnes reportedly earns around £80,000 at Newcastle and has a net worth of around £5million.
