Frank Lampard had an illustrious playing career with Chelsea, New York City, West Ham and Manchester City. But his managerial career hasn't gone to plan.

Lampard is a former player and manager of Chelsea FC and one of the all-time legends at the West London club.

As a box-to-box midfielder, Lampard became Chelsea's all-time record goalscorer with 211 goals in all competitions.

Lampard was also a regular member of the England national team, playing for the Three Lions in Euro 2004 and three World Cups in 2006, 2010 and 2014.

As a youngster, Lampard came through the West Ham United academy, the club his father, Frank Lampard Senior played for. Lampard had a loan spell at Swansea City in 1995 but by the 1998/99 season had become a regular at Upton Park in a team that included fellow homegrown talent Rio Ferdinand.

But, Chelsea became Lampard's club, winning three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a UEFA Champions League with the Blues.

He was named Chelsea manager in 2019 after a short spell as Derby boss, but was sacked from the role in January 2021 and replaced by Thomas Tuchel.

After a year in the managerial wilderness, Lampard was named as Everton manager on January 31 2022.

However, in January 2023 he was sacked after less than a year in charge at Goodison Park, with the club embroiled in a relegation battle for a second successive season.

In a suprise move in April 2023, Lampard found himself back in the hotseat at Stamford Bridge to fill the role of caretaker manager two years after his exit.

His return came after Tuchel's successor, Graham Potter, was dismissed with Chelsea in the bottom half of the Premier League.

However, his second stint at Chelsea made for grim reading. Since Potter was removed and was Lampard handed the reins, the Blues lost eight of their 11 games, winning only once.

Starting out at West Ham

The Lampard name has a strong connection with West Ham United, Chelsea's rivals from East London, due to Frank Lampard Senior, a Hammers playing legend.

Frank Lampard junior's uncle Harry Redknapp brought him into the West Ham team and even defended him at a 1996 fans' event saying Lampard would go "to the very top".

Frank Lampard Jr grew up a West Ham fan but angered Hammers supporters by defecting to Chelsea. West Ham fans still give Lampard abuse whenever the two teams played, with a chant aimed at his weight.

On the abuse, Lampard told the Daily Mail: "In the early years, playing for West Ham fired me up too much but after a couple of years, when I'd settled down, it was just something that fired me up in a good way and made me pretty determined".

Lampard made 175 appearances and scored 33 goals for West Ham between 1995 and 2001.

Blue is the colour

Claudio Ranieri was sufficiently impressed with 22-year-old Frank Lampard's progression at West Ham to make him his first English signing as Chelsea boss in 2001 for £11million.

Lampard quickly became a regular, playing every league game of the 2001/02 season, scoring eight goals in the process.

Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich purchased Chelsea at the start of the 2003/04 season. Lampard had a stellar campaign scoring ten Premier League goals, as Chelsea finished second to champions Arsenal. The Blues were only denied a Premier League title by the Gunners side that went unbeaten all season.

Better was to come for Lampard and Chelsea following the arrival of Jose Mourinho as manager in June 2004.

Mourinho took his debut Premier League title win in 2004/05 with Lampard one of his key players, scoring 19 goals in all competitions and claiming 21 assists.

Lampard was voted Barclays Premier League Player Of The Season as Chelsea won the league with a then-record 95 points. He also won the FWA Footballer of the Year award.

Chelsea claimed back-to-back Premier League titles by clinching top spot in 2005/06 in a season where Lampard cemented his reputation as one of the best midfielders in England.

After two goals against Blackburn Rovers in 2005, Mourinho labelled Lampard as "the best player in the world". Lampard scored a career-high 16 league goals as Chelsea picked up the title with 91 points.

The midfielder was acknowledged on global scale by finishing runner-up to Ronaldinho in the Ballon d'Or.

The 2006/07 season proved a landmark season for Lampard as he broke Dennis Wise's record for Chelsea goals by a midfielder by notching his 77th for the Blues. Lampard picked up his first League Cup and FA Cup in a season where Chelsea excelled in the cup competitions.

The Champions League eluded both Lampard and the Blues however, losing on penalties to Man Utd in the 2007/08 final.

That changed in 2012 however when Chelsea won the Champions League by beating Bayern Munich on penalties in their home stadium, the Allianz Arena. Lampard scored his penalty in the shootout before Bastian Schweinsteiger missed for Bayern, leaving Didier Drogba to wrap up the victory.

In May 2013, Lampard became Chelsea's all-time record scorer by netting twice against Aston Villa. Lampard beat Bobby Tambling's record of 202 goals for the Blues by scoring an 88th-minute winner to reach 203 goals.

Lampard signed a one-year contract extension in 2013, but in June 2014 it was announced that he was to leave the Blues after 13 years at Stamford Bridge.

Moving to New York

A move to New York City FC in July 2014 caused controversy after the midfielder joined Manchester City, New York's sister club in August 2014 on what was described as a six-month loan deal.

Manchester City later admitted that Lampard hadn't signed a two-year deal with New York City, as reported, and the midfielder wasn't on loan from the MLS franchise.

He later officially joined up with New York City FC, making his debut in August 2015 scoring his first MLS goal in September as his team beat Toronto 2-0.

In his second season in New York, Lampard became the first New York City player to score a hat-trick, bagging three goals v Colorado Rapids.

On 14th November 2016 Lampard announced he would be leaving New York when his contract expired.

Three Lions

Lampard made his England debut against Belgium in 1999. He was overlooked for England's Euro 2000 and World Cup 2002 squads but was selected in the squad for Euro 2004 as England reached the quarter-finals.

Lampard was a key part of England's World Cup 2006 team that went out, again in the quarter-finals, to Portugal.

He should have scored the equaliser in the 2010 World Cup round of 16 clash with Germany but his long-range shot was not given despite clearly crossing the line after hitting the bar. Germany went on to win the game 4-1.

Lampard retired from international football after captaining England in the 0-0 draw with Costa Rica at World Cup 2014. He had earned 106 caps and scored 29 goals.

Lampard managerial flops

Lampard started his managerial career at Derby County in May 2018. In his first season in charge he steered the club to a sixth-placed finish in the Championship, but they lost to Aston Villa in the play-off final.

It seemed only a matter of time before Lampard returned to Stamford Bridge as a manager. He did so on July 4th 2019 when he was unveiled as the new Chelsea boss. In his first competitive game in charge, Chelsea lost 4-0 to Manchester United.

His first season in charge was a relative success for the novice manager, guiding Chelsea to fourth place in the Premier League. The Blues also finished runners up to Arsenal in the 2020 FA Cup.

The 2020/21 season didn't go to plan. Despite spending more than £200million on seven major signings in the summer, his Chelsea side slipped out of the Premier League title race.

He was sacked on January 25th 2021, having won just one of his last five league matches and with the club ninth in table.

Lampard was named as the new manager of Everton on January 31, 2022, but he struggled to keep the club clear of a relegation dogfight and at times it looked as though they would drop out of the top flight for the first time since 1954.

But a last gasp 3-2 comeback win over Crystal Palace, in their penultimate game of the season, secured their Premier League safety. Despite a 5-1 final day thumping by Arsenal the club finished 16th, their lowest finish since the 2003/04 campaign.

In January 2023, Lampard was sacked after less than a year in charge at Goodison Park, with the club embroiled in a relegation battle for a second successive season.

He left Goodison Park with the club 19th in the Premier League after a run of nine defeats in 12 games. He won just nine and lost 21 of his 38 Premier League matches and his sacking came just eight days before the first anniversary of his appointment.

Surprise return to Chelsea

Lampard made his surprise return to Chelsea as caretaker manager on April 6, 2023, with the club sitting 11th in the table following a 2-0 defeat to Aston Villa, 14 points adrift of the top four, despite having spent more than £550m on new players this season.

But Lampard's second spell at the club was a disaster. Chelsea lost eight of their 11 games, winning only once.

They were knocked out of the Champions League by Real Madrid at the quarter-final stage, and a 12th-place finish - their lowest since 1996 - means they will not play in Europe next season.

Lampard admitted that working with a bloated squad of 34 first-team players was the most challenging thing he faced at Stamford Bridge.

Frank Lampard is married to the Northern Irish TV presenter Christine Lampard with whom he shares a daughter, Patricia Lampard.

He has two daughters with his former fiancee, the Spanish model Elen Rivas named Luna and Isla.

Lampard has an IQ of over 150, putting him in the top 0.5% of the world's population. He achieved 12 GCSEs at Grade A or A*, including an A in Latin.

Lampard has supported various charities including musical therapy charity Nordoff Robbins, Sport Relief and Heads Together, a mental health initiative.

Frank's maternal cousin is former football Jamie Redknapp and his uncle, football manager Harry Redknapp.
