Who will be next USA manager: Steven Gerrard, Joachim Low and Frank Lampard among contenders

Joachim Low, former Germany national team coach

The United States are on the lookout for a new head coach and the list of potential contenders is mouth-watering to say the least.

The US parted ways with Gregg Berhalter following a hugely disappointing Copa America campaign on home soil.

The Americans went out in the group stage, leaving the federation with no option but to sack Berhalter.

Question is, who will take over the job with just two years to go before a home World Cup?

Jurgen Klopp

Let’s start with the dream appointment – Jurgen Klopp.

Listen, I know what you’re going to say. There’s no way that Klopp will end up with the USMNT. The German has far more lucrative jobs on the table and it would take a mammoth offer from the American to make this happen.

Trouble is, would the US have the funds to bring in the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool boss?

Berhalter made a measly $1.6m per year in charge of the US, while Klopp’s Liverpool wages hit the $20m mark in the Premier League.

Clearly this one is not happening, so lets move on.

Joachim Low

The US national side have a history of German coaches. Lothar Osiander took charge of 18 games back in the 1980s while Jurgen Klinsmann famously took charge of the side for 98 matches between 2011 and 2016.

Could Joachim Low become the latest German to lead the United States?

The 2014 World Cup winner is certainly available. Low departed the German national side back in 2021 and hasn’t worked since.

The 64-year-old would definitely bring plenty of experience to the squad.

Steve Cherundolo

Here’s a more realistic appointment. Los Angeles FC boss Steve Cherundolo is the current front runner for the role.

The 45-year-old has been in charge of the club since January 2022 and has so far claimed the MLS Cup and the Supporters’ Shield.

As a player, Cherundolo made 87 appearances for the United States and even helped the side to the 2005 Gold Cup.

Whether the former right-back could turn around the fortunes of the national team as a manager is another matter.

David Wagner

Another potential German contender is David Wagner. In truth, Wagner was born in Germany but represented the United States as an international player.

Wagner has Premier League and Bundesliga experience. What’s more, he is available after his Norwich City run came to a relatively quick end.

Steven Gerrard

England legend Steven Gerrard is also on the list of contenders. The 44-year-old is currently employed by Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia but the chance to manage at a World Cup could prove attractive.

Gerrard is no stranger to the United States having played for LA Galaxy back in 2015/16.

Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard is another former English legend who is in contention for the job.

Similarly to Gerrard, Lampard spent a year in America playing for New York City FC. The midfielder bagged 15 goals in 29 appearances.

He also has prior managerial experienced having worked at Debry County, Everton and Chelsea.
