Ferrari engineer Jock Clear rejects copycat claims, embraces continuous development

Jock Clear

Ferrari's Jock Clear has dismissed allegations of copying Red Bull's Formula 1 upgrade for their SF-23 machine, emphasizing the team's commitment to their own unique design.

Ferrari's senior performance engineer, Jock Clear, has firmly dismissed allegations that the team merely mimicked Red Bull in their recent upgrade to the SF-23 Formula 1 car.
Responding to the speculation surrounding Ferrari's adoption of a downwash-style package, reminiscent of Red Bull's design since 2022, Clear highlighted the importance of aerodynamics in performance differentiation.
"The shape of the sidepods doesn't play a significant role in performance variation. The primary factor in generating downforce and lap-time lies in the car's floor," Clear emphasised, quashing suggestions of imitation.
In his capacity as Charles Leclerc's driver coach, in addition to being a senior performance engineer, Clear addressed the media and clarified Ferrari's approach. "When we unveil our car, we believe in it wholeheartedly. There is no doubt in our minds. We learn from others' innovations while focusing on our own path. We do not aim to copy; we analyse their developments, return to our wind tunnel, and ascertain their effectiveness."
Clear further elaborated, stating, "The introduction of these new parts demonstrates their efficacy. It exemplifies our dedication to scientific principles. Aerodynamics, which is fundamental to this sport, entices us year after year. Each day and each car present unique challenges, and there are countless ways to solve problems. Observing others' successes allows us to incorporate valuable insights into our own design."
He stressed the importance of discipline in the pursuit of progress. "In this field, knee-jerk reactions are counterproductive. When you witness a successful innovation, you must exercise patience. It takes months to fine-tune its compatibility with our car. Only then can we truly appreciate its merits."
Clear concluded by affirming that Ferrari's recent upgrades were the fruits of their meticulous approach. "These developments are stepping stones towards further progress. They mark the beginning of our exploration of new avenues."
As Ferrari shifts its focus to the forthcoming Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal, the team remains steadfast in their commitment to continuous development, building on their rich racing heritage.
