Toto Wolff critiques Red Bull's Formula 1 floor, 'not convinced about its beauty'
Mercedes’ Toto Wolff has expressed his team's reservations regarding the aesthetics of Red Bull's F1 floor, stating that his engineers are not entirely "convinced about the beauty" of its design.
Toto Wolff, boss of the Mercedes F1 team, has expressed reservations about the aesthetic appeal of Red Bull's Formula 1 floor.
Following Sergio Perez's crash at the recent Monaco Grand Prix, the RB19's undercarriage was exposed for the first time, granting rival teams a glimpse into the secrets of the leading car.
In the 2023 season, the performance differentiator lies in the design of the car floors, making the examination of Red Bull's undercarriage vital for the other nine teams vying for the Constructors' Championship.
While Mercedes is exploring potential inspirations from Red Bull's floor, Wolff has conceded that its visual appeal leaves much to be desired.
"In my view, whether it's complex or not, if it's fast, it's good," Wolff conveyed to the media when discussing the Red Bull floor. "That floor is undeniably very fast. I posed the question to my engineering team, and they highlighted interesting aspects for analysis regarding its aerodynamic functions.
"However, they weren't convinced about the elegance and functionality of its design."
The Mercedes team principal also addressed the challenges his own team faced with car stability in 2022, assuring that those issues are now a thing of the past.
"There are no longer any discussions about altering the regulations or raising the floor edges," Wolff affirmed. "Bouncing is no longer a concern. When it occurred during the Spanish GP Qualifying, we learned which direction to avoid. We can now focus on performance and downforce."
Nevertheless, Wolff cautioned that achieving the desired targets could be precarious, contributing to the significant disparities in performance observed among teammates.
With the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal on the horizon, Mercedes will now shift their focus to the upcoming race weekend.
