Kevin Magnussen banned from Azerbaijan Grand Prix after collision with Pierre Gasly
Haas driver Kevin Magnussen has been handed a ban from the upcoming Azerbaijan Grand Prix after exceeding the allowed number of penalty points within a year.
Magnussen received a 10-second penalty and two penalty points on his license for a collision with Alpine's Pierre Gasly during the Italian Grand Prix. This incident pushed his total to 12 points within a 12-month period, triggering an automatic race ban as per the regulations.
Haas has yet to announce who will step in for Magnussen during the Baku race, scheduled for September 13-15. Possible replacements include Briton Oliver Bearman, who has been signed for the 2025 season, and reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi.
Magnussen expressed his frustration with the penalty, questioning the decision to penalize him for what he saw as a minor incident. The collision occurred when Magnussen made contact with the side of Gasly's car at the second chicane.
"Me and Gasly had slight contact, no damage on either car, no consequence in the race, we just had slight contact and missed the corner, and so what? We were racing," Magnussen remarked before his ban was officially confirmed.
He continued, "I have spoken to [the stewards] so many times, and I still don't understand what the rules are. They don‘t want racing, that's what it seems to me. If this thing between me and Gasly can't be deemed a racing incident, then I don't know what can; it doesn't make sense."
Magnussen also compared his penalty to another incident during the same race involving his teammate Nico Hulkenberg and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo, suggesting a lack of consistency from the stewards.
"I don't know why we need to be throwing around penalties like this," he said. "And on top of that, I saw Nico almost get thrown into the wall at 300 km/h by Ricciardo. I'm not saying he did it on purpose, but still, he got five seconds, and I got 10 seconds. It doesn't add up at all."
