Fernando Alonso reflects on his illustrious Formula 1 career and future ambitions

Fernando Alonso

Renowned as the most seasoned driver not only on the current Formula 1 grid but also in the annals of the sport, Fernando Alonso, steering for Aston Martin, boasts an unparalleled track record.

Aston Martin's seasoned driver, Fernando Alonso, stands as the most seasoned competitor on the current Formula 1 roster, etching his name in the annals of the sport's history with a remarkable 370 Grands Prix under his belt since his maiden stint with Minardi back in 2001.
Since those early days, the Spaniard has accumulated a glittering array of accomplishments, boasting two world titles, 32 race victories, 104 podium finishes, 22 pole positions, and an impressive tally of over 2,000 points. His journey has seen him don the liveries of Renault, McLaren, Ferrari, Alpine, and now, the current outfit, Aston Martin.
However, in the midst of these triumphs, Alonso has also navigated through his fair share of trying moments. He recently laid bare his sentiments during an appearance on the High Performance podcast, co-hosted by former BBC F1 presenter, Jake Humphrey.
In a comprehensive dialogue, when asked to pinpoint the most significant disappointment of his career, Alonso responded thoughtfully, saying, "It is difficult to single out just one. I don't dwell on it much. If I were to turn back time..."
"Winning a championship with Ferrari would probably top my list if I could rewind time. In 2010 and 2012, we came tantalizingly close to clinching the championship, and that could have altered the course of many things and the narratives surrounding them. Missing out on those was undoubtedly disheartening."
He continued, "Then again, as this is a realm where change is challenging, and it hinges on numerous external factors, including other individuals and team performances, it's hard to harbour regrets, given these are beyond your control."
Expanding on his reflections, he remarked, "What I do regret, without a doubt, is not relishing my time, my career, to the fullest. I'm aware that my driving career is approaching its twilight, and in a few years, I'll embark on a new phase. When I look back at my journey, I'll cherish many great moments, invaluable friendships, and incredible experiences. Yet, I'll also think, 'I should have savoured those moments more.'"
"If I had the chance to live my life over precisely as it was, I might not change my teams or decisions, or that elusive Ferrari title. Instead, I'd endeavour to immerse myself even more in those moments and cultivate lasting memories."
He reminisced, "I clinched the championship in Brazil in 2005 and 2006, yet I can scarcely recall much from those afternoons and evenings, which is a poignant realization. These are the aspects I would modify."
Alonso further elucidated that, with his new journey at Aston Martin in 2023, relishing the present takes precedence. While securing a third F1 championship remains a goal, he has additional motorsport aspirations for the coming years.
"I would cherish another [F1] championship victory, but it's not the paramount focus," he affirmed, boasting six podium finishes in 12 races this season. "I find joy in the process, especially with Aston Martin, of becoming a contender for the future. I relish the moments with the team and our collective growth in diverse spheres."
He hinted at future endeavours, stating, "I will likely attempt the Dakar Rally again, 99% certain, if an opportunity arises. It's not that the third world title diminishes in importance; it remains a priority. However, winning the Dakar Rally someday is also of great significance to me. Perhaps I'll have to make attempts over the next eight, ten years, or however long it takes, until I can vie for victory."
He concluded, "But winning in F1, endurance racing, and Dakar would hold a unique place in my heart, both as a driver and as an individual. These are the challenges that currently occupy my thoughts."
At the midpoint of the season, Alonso occupies the third spot in the drivers' standings, trailing the Red Bull duo of Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez, while Aston Martin securely holds third place in the constructors' championship, following Red Bull and Mercedes.
Formula 1 action is slated to resume post the summer hiatus, with the Dutch Grand Prix scheduled for 28 August at Circuit Zandvoort.
