Taxi standoff threatens Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix access to Zandvoort

Zandvoort Circuit

The municipality of Zandvoort are engaged in discussions with taxi drivers who are set to disrupt the upcoming Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix.

The Zandvoort municipality are engaged in talks with taxi drivers poised to disrupt the Dutch Grand Prix, embroiled in a dispute regarding their access to the circuit.
Approximately 150 taxi drivers face potential exclusion from the Zandvoort circuit, slated to accommodate over 100,000 daily visitors, due to lacking the requisite certification for entry. A select group of drivers will secure a distinctive 'Taxi-pass' certification, facilitating their access.
The drivers have dispatched a missive to Zandvoort's municipality and the organizers of the Dutch GP. However, an area spokesperson informs RacingNews365 that no exceptions will be granted.
Walter Sans, representing the Zandvoort municipality, commented: "In the previous two editions, they were denied access to Zandvoort. Nevertheless, last year, taxis illicitly procured a passage permit and autonomously entered the village, extending their services. This transpired to be highly problematic, undermining our mobility plan. Consequently, we've affirmed that the regulations, established for the past two years, will be rigorously upheld this year. Permitted taxis possess a valid pass and are thus readily identifiable."
Taxi drivers have issued a threat to disrupt the weekend's proceedings, employing either protest or obstructing access roads to the circuit.
The Zandvoort municipality reveals it's in deliberation with local authorities, strategising on how to manage the situation.
"Now they're indicating an intention to obstruct. This results in a scenario reminiscent of other demonstrations. Protests are permissible in the Netherlands, aligning with other forms of activism," said the spokesperson.
"Consultations are ongoing with individuals responsible for maintaining public order and security, including the police. Our focus is on devising strategies to manage such demonstrations. We've further expounded upon the rationale behind our regulations, including admission ticket requirements. The evaluation report from last year underscored the disruptive impact of unauthorized taxi passage.
"Hence, our present endeavour involves a discourse concerning these potential protests and demonstrations."
Formula 1 currently enjoys a summer hiatus and will return for the Dutch Grand Prix on 28 August at Circuit Zandvoort.
