Yarmouth best bet: Return to happy hunting ground can help Priscilla’s Wish come good

Yarmouth provides a decent card to enjoy on a sunny June afternoon, and this competitive sprint promises to give bettors plenty to cheer about down the six-furlong stretch.

16:40 Yarmouth: QuinnBet Best Odds Guaranteed Handicap  (6 furlongs)

The bookies have this lined up as a two-horse race between Tennessee Gold and Hover On The Wind, the latter of whom boasts figures of 213 from his three outings this season, all over this course and distance during April and May.

That record certainly appears to hold Chris Dwyer’s four-year-old in good stead, although even those figures pale against the course form of Priscilla’s Wish, who has won no less than seven times at this venue, including an impressive five-timer over both six and seven furlongs during the summer of 2022.

The most recent of those seven Yarmouth wins came over this trip last June, when she enjoyed the same good-to-firm conditions expected here, and when she was racing in slightly higher 0-80 company.

Suggested best bet: Priscilla’s Wish each-way in the 16:40 at Yarmouth

The rating of Philip McBride’s six-year-old mare has dropped four pounds during a nine-race winless streak, during which her best showing was again on her return to this track on her penultimate outing in May, when she finished runner-up of seven over the longer seven-furlong trip on soft ground.

She was last seen in action 12 days ago at Doncaster, when again the conditions were probably softer than she might have preferred and she was not at her best in beating just a couple of her eight rivals.

This return to a shorter six-furlong trip on firmer ground at a venue she clearly favours is expected to bring a rejuvenated performance, while the booking of Jack Gilligan seems to be another positive factor.

After spending a decade winning over 400 races in the United States, Gilligan has soon made his presence known back on home soil, and is currently just shy of 50 betting units up on the bookies this season after landing 20 winners and a further 37 places from his 118 rides.
