Pontefract best each-way bets 1545: Aviemore and Tele Red looking to chase red-hot favourite home

The only UK Flat racing on Monday afternoon sees Pontefract take centre stage, with this one-mile handicap appearing to be one of the most competitive races on the card.

Odds-on Old Cock looks a worthy favourite after opening his winning account at the second attempt in a maiden at Ayr in April, and then following up with an equally impressive victory on handicap debut at Haydock 24 days ago.

Edward Bethell’s gelding looks very much the one to beat, but his shortening price holds little appeal, while also enhancing the each-way value of his eight rivals to make the minor places, or maybe even run him close if he falters.

With that in mind, we have our eyes on a couple of much more attractively priced contenders, who would each return more profit for making the frame than the favourite will for winning.

Charlie Johnston saddles Aviemore for his third career outing, and will hope to see further improvement from his three-year-old old son of Kodiac.

His Nottingham debut in April is best forgotten, but he quickly bounced back from that inauspicious opener to earn back-to-back runner-up spots at Carlisle, missing out by a head in the first, and then only beaten by a progressive odds-on favourite last time a fortnight ago.

Both of those near misses were over nine furlongs, so this shorter trip should be of no concerns, and in the capable hands of Jason Hart he looks poised to make his mark on handicap debut.

Suggested bet: Aviemore each-way in the 15:45 at Pontefract

Also catching the eye is by far the most experienced horse in the field, Tele Red, who looks a very interesting prospect on a belated season debut.

This exposed seven-year-old notched up five wins and six runner-up spots in 23 outings over his last two campaigns, with his most recent win coming in his penultimate 2023 outing over this mile trip at Ayr last September.

Karl Burke’s string has been showing good form in the first few months of the season, and if Tele Red is tuned up to a similar level, then he might well hit the ground running here.

His mark looks a little higher than ideal, but that is offset by Sam Feilden’s seven-pound claim, and while he might not have the measure of the favourite here, he certainly has the credentials to put himself in the each-way mix.

Alternative each-way punt: Tele Red each-way in the 15:45 at Pontefract
