Cheltenham Festival 2022: Friday's Gold Cup tips - Galvin galvanized for glory

Scottish National remains an option for Festival hero Galvin

Planet Sport's expert panel have assembled to discuss the 2022 Cheltenham Gold Cup. Gordon Elliott's Galvin could have the staying power for the big win.

It's the big one and a glittering trio of the Racing Post's David Carr, former Cheltenham Festival winning rider Dominic Elsworth and Planet Sport's tipster Jonathan Doidge go for gold with a discussion on the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The Grade 1 centrepiece is the fourth race on day four at Cheltenham, kicking off at 15:30 and you can follow the action in our live race centre.

One of the most open renewals in recent years, much will depend on the staying power of Henry De Bromhead's A Plus Tard versus the finishing speed of stayer Galvin.

Last year's winner Minella Indo can't be written off, while Dan Skelton's Protektorat could score for part-owner Sir Alex Ferguson.

Here's what Planet Sport's expert panel makes of a shimmering Cheltenham Gold Cup 2022.

Galvin - David Carr (Racing Post)

"The Gold Cup, even if they don't go a great pace is always a thorough test of stamina. A Plus Tard, the favourite, I'm not certain he stays the full three and a quarter miles.

"Galvin could be the one that could expose any chinks in his armour, he's looked a natural at this sort of race since winning the National Hunt Chase here last year, he out-stayed A Plus Tard at Leopardstown and I think Galvin could take plenty of beating."

Galvin - Dominic Elsworth (Cheltenham Festival winning jockey)

"I really fancy Galvin, he's a real stayer will love the conditions, owned by Ronnie Bartlett who's a great supporter of the game and a throughly nice man so it will be nice for him to reap the rewards of the Gold Cup."

Galvin - Jonathan Doidge (Planet Sport tipster)

"I've been keen on this horse since I saw him win the long distance, the three miles, six race last year with a bit of improvement in him and I think Galvin is made for a Cheltenham Gold Cup where we are going to get a pretty strongly run race as we usually do.

"A lot to like about his Savills Chase defeat of A Plus Tard, just don't think that horse stays quite as well as this one will, not staying it doesn't stay at all but this will be a couple of strides in front come the line. Just looks Gold Cup winning material."
