2024 World Matchplay tips: Luke Humphries targets Blackpool glory, Rob Cross the dark horse

Luke Humphries kisses the 2024 World Darts Championship trophy

One of the biggest darting events in the world returns as the Winter Gardens in Blackpool prepares to host the 31st edition of the World Matchplay.

Back in the day, Blackpool was a thriving holiday destination for millions of tourists every year.

Today, the city is known for its derelict infrastructure, crazy stag dos and a bang average football club – no offence.

Pulling visitors back into the city has been a challenge, though there is one event which never fails to deliver. That, of course, is the World Matchplay.

Since 1994, the tournament has been held at the infamous Winter Gardens – bar one edition in 2020 during the Covid pandemic.

A total of 32 players will be looking to lift the Phil Taylor trophy, including one Nathan Aspinall who powered to the title last year.

The Asp is not among the top eight favourites on this occasion, being priced by bookmakers at around the 33/1 mark.

Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen are both among the top contenders, though with the two powerhouses playing each other in the first round, it may be better to stay clear of the duo.

World champion Luke Humphries is the favourite for the title and that shouldn’t come as a big surprise.

Cool Hand Luke has had the darting world in his hands this season, winning two major titles and reaching two other major finals.

Humphries is undoubtedly a good choice if you’re looking for a strong selection at a low price.

However, if you’re looking to find a tad more value for your buck, you may want to consider Rob Cross.

Priced around the 14/1 mark, Voltage offers tremendous value considering his impressive run of form.

The former world champion has reached three World Series finals and recently claimed the Baltic Sea Darts Open title.

Suggested bets

Nap – Luke Humphries

Dark Horse – Rob Cross
