2023 World Grand Prix tips: Michael van Gerwen domination, Gerwyn Price test, Gary Anderson surprise
The World Grand Prix has been a tournament dominated by one man in recent years – Michael van Gerwen. Question is, can anyone stop the Dutchman in 2023?
The Green Machine has won this tournament six times across the last 11 years, beating a different opponent in each of those finals.
Van Gerwen has one final defeat to his name which came all the way back in 2015 against Robert Thornton.
Last year, the Dutchman won the £120,000 prize after beating Nathan Aspinall 5-3 at Leicester’s Morningside Arena.
This season, Van Gerwen has won two non-ranking events in the form of the Premier League and the World Series of Darts.
However, the 34-year-old is still searching for his first major ranking event victory having fallen to defeats in the World Championship and UK Open finals.
Two men who are expected to challenge Van Gerwen in Leicester are fellow heavyweights Gerwyn Price and Michael Smith.
The Welshman won this event in 2020 and reached the final a year later, ultimately losing out to fellow countryman Jonny Clayton. Smith, on the other hand, has never gone past the Last 16 stage.
Price has been in decent form throughout September and even clinched a Players Championship win on the tour.
Smith, meanwhile, isn’t quite firing on all cylinders, though you can never count out the reigning world champion.
One man who does not immediately appear on the outright list is Gary Anderson.
The Scot claimed the latest Players Championship event and appears to be growing in confidence.
The two-time PDC world champion has already averaged over 100 in a match 41 times during the 2023 season.
Bearing everything in mind, our main pick for the tournament has to be the defending king Van Gerwen. However, if you’re looking for an outsider, Anderson is your man at around the 25/1 mark.
