Darts news: Has Michael van Gerwen got his mojo back?

Michael van Gerwen will come on stage during the Ostsee Darts Gala in the Sparkassen-Arena.

Michael van Gerwen has had a long wait for a big title but says his mental strength will get him back to his best form this year.

Mighty Mike was once the most feared player on the oche, but he has lost that fear factor over the last couple of years with the likes of Gerwyn Price, Peter Wright and even Jonny Clayton hoovering up all the big titles.

Van Gerwen claimed theΒ Interwetten German Darts Championship at the weekend with what was his first European Tour title in two-and-a-half years.

MVG won the Nordic Darts Masters last year but you have to go back to 2020 for his last big tournament victories when he claimed the UK Open and Players Championship Finals.

The 32-year-old brieflyΒ slipped down into fifth in the PDC order of Merit recently, his worst ranking in over a decade, but the signs are that he's starting to get back to his best.

Van Gerwen hasΒ won the last two Premier League nights to sit on top of the table and his victory in Hildesheim puts him back into third in the world rankings.

MVG has mental edge back

The signs on the oche are ominous, and off it the man himself says that mentally he's feeling much stronger than he has been - and that could spell trouble for the rest.
"I've been waiting for this for a really long time, I've been working hard," said Van Gerwen.
"I keep fighting and never give up. Mentally I showed a lot over the past few months to work myself back towards where I should be.
"To win a tournament feels absolutely phenomenal, it means a lot to me. To have crowds back is fantastic, it means the world to me.
"I love to play the tournaments in Germany; these crowds are what darts is all about, they come here to enjoy themselves and finally I am enjoying myself too."

Van Gerwen chasing big trophies

Van Gerwen is back in Premier League action in Nottingham on Thursday, and the fact he's enjoying his darts again should sound out a warning for the entire PDC circuit.

The strength in depth in darts now is much stronger than it had been in the earlier parts of Van Gerwen's career, but it's only a few years ago that he was cleaning up in the PDC.
A five-time Premier League champion and three-time world champion, Van Gerwen won both of those tournaments for the last time only in 2019 - when he also added the likes of the World Grand Prix, The Masters, Players Championship Finals and World Series of Darts Finals.
If Van Gerwen has that winning mentality back then get ready for some darting fireworks.
